burning the film on your mask

The toothpaste idea works great getting the film off the glass. Do it two or three times and you're ready to go. Fogging can still occur even after using spit, de-fogger, or Naupaka. This is because our body temp will always be warmer than the ambient exterior temp of the water, thus causing...

    Breathing control!

"also an athlete will usually use more air" No, this is a misconception and often misinterpreted fact. A low heart rate(68 and below)helps immensely. While it is true that at "peak performance" athletes need more oxygen and can sustain that oxygen intake over a longer period of time, at rest...

    What would you dive with?

4/3 wetsuit, gloves and booties. With a steel 100 I only need 8lbs of lead...yeah!

    surfacing from bottom

OK, I am a little confused here. We have many experienced divers ascending two different ways. A few newbie questions: Which is safer? Which should I practice more? Is one better than the other? My instructor pointed out that the kicking ascent is used because you always (try to) stay...

    Bad Buddy Concerns

You can find buddies to dive with other than your cousin. You could also pay a DM at a shop 40 bucks and they will dive with you. There are many options...

    To dive dry?

Thanks people! I contacted Dayo and they do not have my size left for the Black Ice sale, although their prices in general are great. Here are two more newbie questions: If my size is in between, should I go with the larger size? Where is the exhaust valve placed "on the outside" so you can...

    To dive dry?

I have decided to try diving dry. As I am on a budget I am looking for a good $1000 new suit if in fact one is available. The only one I have seen close is the Bare Nex-Gen Pro Dry Suit on Leisure Pro. Any opinions on this suit or one close to the same price range? Thanks in advance!

Large pelagic action off of redondo beach today

Good chance that they were Thresher sharks feeding on mackerel (if not dolphins). You can usually tell by the long tail whipping around above and below the water line. I had lunch at Nelson's in P.V. yesterday and spotted two sets of sharks (Blues or Threshers) feeding about a 1/2 mile out...

    Big Guy, Out of Gas

Accolades to you for helping a novice diver in a tough situation. I agree with TSandM, there was nothing you could have done as the die was cast. I have been lucky enough to get great advice from experienced divers and, even with my low dive count, am very comfortable in the water...especially...

Winter wetsuit diving in BC. Is it crazy?

I spend part of the year on Vancouver Island and have decided to get a dry suit for it. Ogden Point rents two piece 7mm (which equates to 14mm core) and I was fine in 50 degree surface, 42 degree at 40 feet during the spring. I dove Maple Bay in my 8/7 sol FX in winter and was good for one...

is an 8/7 wetsuit inappropriate for warmer water?

I have a Sol FX for So Cal. Used it in BC, Canada and would get a dry if up there all the time. As for 75 degree water, a 3mm is plenty so I would rent while there as the 8/7 takes up a lot of room and weighs quite a bit. Get Wet!

Good tropical diving closer to the US

Florida diving rocks! Hawaii is wonderful! Kona diving is amazing and if you search you will find great deals right now. Condo rentals are as low as they have ever been. The shore diving is fantastic and some of the three tank day trips are 100 bucks. If you hit up priceline you can get a...

Why it should be LAW that people should get certified

On a lighter note, I love the fact that you are doing a paper on diving! Perhaps you should concentrate on why everyone "should" learn to scuba dive-how it brings people of different nationalities together-how people who don't speak the same language can still be good buddies with mutual...

Why it should be LAW that people should get certified

Your in AP English and you have not read 1984? Oh my! I read that novel once a year to remind myself what could become of our society...a personal self scare tactic:(

What would be a safer weight next dive?

14lbs seems very light for a new diver with a 5mm. 5mm seems really thin for the waters you dive in. In BC I dive with an 8mm hooded and am often cold. The rentals are usually 7mm john with a 7mm top, equating to 14mm around your core. There is no way you should have shot to the surface at...

    Snorkeling on the Big Island

The bay off of the City of Refuge is wonderful to skin dive. I also like the Koloko Ponds (my favorite, but strong current on the entry and exit when there is swell). Get Wet!

burning the film on your mask

Here is what I do: I vigorously scrub the inside of the lens with toothpaste, let it dry, then light the toothpaste on fire until it is sooty. I rinse the soot off with Gold's de fogging drops and then repeat as necessary! Works like a charm and smells great too! Get Wet
