    Area Gulf Water Conditions

Out about 20 miles from AMI Saturday in 85'. The coldest my computer registered was 57 though, seems a bit higher than the rest of you. Vis was pushing 30', no complaints at all about that. Oh, and side note: my new drysuit is AWESOME! :D

air embolism possible from < 10' deep?

thanks for the tip, wouldn't want to break any laws... As I had stated in my second post, I confused embolism with saturated gases. My thanks to those who pointed this out without devolving to the 'I'm a gooder diver cuz I'm more smarter than you' attitude, I did learn something and for that...

air embolism possible from < 10' deep?

So I'm confusing saturation with an embolism then? I.E. if you filled your lungs at, say, 10' off your regulator and swam to the surface without exhaling, that's when you could potentially have an embolism. That makes a lot more sense, I was thinking the saturated nitrogen in the bloodstream...

air embolism possible from < 10' deep?

I was surfing the 'net and came across this site: Autopsy Protocol Dr. Raymond Sawchuk The quotation below was from that site: "We know air embolism can occur in water depths of as little as 6 to 8 feet in experiments with animals. It has been shown transpulmonic pressure differential of 80...

    Area Gulf Water Conditions

Did 1 dive yesterday, about 27 miles off LBK. My max depth was 103, temp at the bottom was 69, vis was not very good, 10' would be generous. Managed to shoot a couple fish but the vis did not make it easy, lots of gags out there though. Did much better with hook and line...

What do you consider basic spearfishing gear?

one thing I haven't seen mentioned, I always bring a spare band for the gun I'm using

    Speargun for Trout

I'd think something in the 36-42" range would be all you need. The really short guns can be difficult to shoot straight over a decent distance. The shortest gun I use is a 42", but a couple of my friends shoot 36" (for small stuff obviously) and they don't seem to complain about them too much...

    First time out...

I've got one buddy in particular who after all these years STILL thinks he can swim faster than a fish. I can't tell you how many times I've given him a piece of my mind about this but I digress... They will always be able to outswim you so approach them as non-threatening and calmly as you...

    Spearfishing with Scuba

I use them exclusively when bottom fishing and STILL probably 1 in 4 come up gut hooked! So spearing is more eco-friendly :D

    Spearfishing with Scuba

depends on conditions, less than about 30' and I can see reasonably well, I'll freedive. I actually prefer not having all the scuba gear on if it isn't necessary. If vis isn't the best or diving deeper, I have no problems putting on scuba gear and spearing. Dunno about the rest of you but I'm...

    Spearfishing on oil rigs

    Steel Tanks...?

just a little FYI based on something I saw earlier, some of the HP's are the 'fat' 8" diameter tanks as well. I've got a set of PST HP130's that are 8" (I was told they are basically the same as the older LP104's just certified for the higher pressure, but don't take that as gospel, would...

    Anna Maria Island spearfisherman missing

I just sent MissDirected a PM with the same info, but here it goes for the rest: The boat the missing diver had been on putted up to us while we were anchored up Friday afternoon. The men in the boat said that the coast guard had found his BC and speargun. I didn't ask at the time whether BC...

    Area Gulf Water Conditions

Went today off Anna Maria Island, three dives, one each at 22, 20, and 17 miles. Viz was 20-25 foot at each spot, coldest temp was 82 F on the bottom out 22 miles, mid-80's at the others. Bad news however, a boat came up to us and said they had lost a diver about 4 hours beforehand. The...

Getting another speargun, what options am I overlooking?

alrighty guys, let's stay friendly :) I do like the shock chord wrapping for that pelaj, I need to look into it and railguns in general more later. One thing I left out in the OP, the father's getting older but not giving up, just wanting things easier to use. I've already been voted down on...

Getting another speargun, what options am I overlooking?

Long post so apologies to start with. Between the father, brother, and I we currently have 2 guns: 1. AB Biller 42", two grooves, 5/16 shaft, pigtail-type shock cord 2. Riffe standard series, 55", regular mono chord Looking to get a good snorkeling-type or smaller fish gun, more in the...
