Questions about diving on the honeymoon in both Kauai & Maui

Just got back from Kauai a few weeks ago. I did a boat dive with Fathom Five and thought they did a great job, but given the sea sickness you mention, they probably would not be a good choice since their boats are smaller. In fact, I didn't think the waves were too bad but we did have one...

    dive in kauai hawaii

Another vote for The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook. I believe the same people do similar books for the other islands as well. I dove with Fathom Five in Kauai last month. I stayed in Lihue and it took about 25 minutes to get to the shop in Poipu in the morning. Did a boat dive but they have...

    Another Transplant to TX...

Thanks for all the replies. When does diving at CSSP taper off due to winter, or are there brave souls who dive there year-round?

    Your job............

Production Engineer for a pressure pipe manufacturer (the big pipes used in water distribution systems - up to 12-foot diameter) and a Naval Reserve officer.

    Probably a dumb question but...

This practice is recommended for US citizens for any trip you take outside the country - also leave a copy with relatives in the US. In case your passport is lost or stolen, it supposedly makes it easier to replace.

    Another Transplant to TX...

I recently moved to the Ft Worth area and am looking forward to getting some freshwater experience. Any recommendations on LDS? I live near Keller (a bit confusing - Keller mailing address, Keller schools, in Ft Worth city limits but 15 miles from downtown). Currently PADI OW certified but...

Who was born or lived near water

Except for 3 years I've always lived within 25 miles of an ocean (and those 3 years were close to the Great Lakes), but being close to the ocean really wasn't a significant factor in learning to dive. I have always been into water sports and that is what led me to diving.

    Major Environmental Issue: LFA Sonar

Naval Sonars ...and you might want to check some of the NRDC "facts"...LFA has not been used or tested since April 1998.

    Learing to Dive

I also did all my training in the tropics. Haven't yet done any local diving, although I think I am finally going to brave the cold waters here by the end of the summer.

    Should C-Cards Expire?

for OW and AOW. Perhaps dive operators could do a little better job checking C-cards or log books. If there is a move towards recertification, by all means there should be a mechanism to demonstrate proficiency through a certain number of logged dives, additional training, or a combination...

    a book recomendation

... in .pdf format. Here are some links: US Navy Dive Manual (Note that this is an EXTREMELY large file ~54MB for the complete manual. If you only want portions, a good site is http://www.coralspringsscuba.com/miscellaneous/usn_manual.htm. NOAA Diving Program website

    Getting wet locally

Diver Dan's in Santa Clara offers a "Discover Local Diving" orientation for Monterey that costs $20 plus dive equipment/boat fees (if applicable) - a classroom session on Wed night and then dive the following Sat. Haven't done it myself but it looks interesting. Check out the website for...

Aruba, recommended dive tours for a 'beginner'

I've dived with both Red Sail Sports and Dive Aruba, and didn't have any problems with either (I certified with RSS). As far as diving deeper than 60 ft, most of the spots the dive boats hit are fairly shallow. You can check the schedule and go on those dives to ensure you remain within your...

Aruba - exposure suit in august?

I've been vacation diving in Aruba for the past three years...have always worn a 3mm shortie. I also haven't done more than 2 dives per day nor dived more than 3 days. Most people seem to wear shorties from my observations, although I have seen full wetsuits and I have even seen someone dive...

I know nothing about wreck penetration, haven't done it, probably won't for a while. But just for my enlightenment, what organization(s) does provide the appropriate training?

    Naval Sonar

Do you have a link you can provide for this paper? Is it for the LFA sonar or about sonar in general? The NRDC letter (I'd like to use a different word but I'll be diplomatic ;) ) seemed to confuse LFA with all sonar (blaming LFA for incidents that couldn't have been caused by LFA sinced it...

    Naval Sonar

Disclaimer - As you can probably tell from my SB name, I am affiliated with the US Navy - as a Reserve Officer. The statements below are my opinions, with what I believe to be some facts to support them. "Mid-frequency sonar" - not LFA. As noted in previous posts, SURTASS LFA has not been used...

    padi table vs. SSI table

Although it looks like you might have an older PADI table, the concept you describe still works the same on the newer table. I took my OW a little over 2 years ago - my RDP version is 1.0 010 PDK9. On it, 50 min at 50 ft puts you in Pressure Group P in Table 1...In Table 3, PG P at 50 ft gives...

    Multi-level Dives

Is the Wheel sold separately from the OW training materials? I haven't seen it, either at an LDS or online. I do some diving in areas where the Wheel would be very handy, particularly since I don't have a computer.
