    Rental Gear Question

Actually, nobody rents bottom timers. You will need your own watch if you are not diving with a computer.

    Rental Gear Question

Generally: Full hard gear will include Regulator, BCD, and tank (included on the boat in Cozumel). Weights are included on the boat in cozumel, but are not generally considered part of a full gear rental. The regulator set will include an SPG, two second stages, and an analog depth gauge...

Failed Open Water Cert Dive - Panicked and Bolted for the Surface - Confidence gone!

I personally get anxiety from wearing an improperly fit hood. I recommend that you buy your own, and make sure that you buy a high-quality well fit hood. The Henderson H2 hood is an excellent option, but there are others. If your hood is truly the issue, you will do a lot better. Also when...

"Altitude" Diving When Already Living at Altitude

What a great idea. Maybe some of us should get together and open a saturation diving hotel.

    Holding your breath

The answer to your question is both. However, it is mostly the volume difference. Your lungs will expand until there is no longer any room to expand. Then they will be injured by the pressure that is trying to expand them beyond that point. My understanding is that the additional pressure...

    Holding your breath

You can't not exhale with an open airway on ascent. Physics won't allow out. The problem with panic is that we naturally close our airway in that situation.

    Checking your buddy's gas

I think on any dive with an END greater than 100 FSW (where END = depth for us recreational divers), we ought to be checking our buddy's air quite regularily in addition to NDL. Where narcosis is a risk, a redundant brain only makes sense.

When you travel to dive do you do anything else?

I think it is a good idea to leave land activities for the end of the dive trip. That way if you get blown out or can"t dive for any reason, you can just pull forward the land activity, and dive on the last day, making sure you keep your 18-24 hour surface interval before flying of course.

    Bolting to the surface...

This whole thread really should be in accidents and incidents near misses. I agree with bbarnett. Regardless of any errors your buddy made, your number one error was taking your eyes off of him prior to completing the air share, and making sure he was OK. In all probably, your buddy received...

    Checking your buddy's gas

I check my buddy's air occasionally to keep track of things like turnaround points. At the same time, I let my buddy know how much air I have left so that he/she can also keep track of the same things.

    1/3 Rule?

I will put a buddy's rig on my tank, and cross check the reading against my own. Your SPG should be checked when your regulators are serviced. It's not calibration. It is a simple check.

    1/3 Rule?

Pressure gauges like all other equipment should be checked regularly. I would not dive with an SPG I knew was off by 150 PSI.

    Drying gloves and boots

I don't know where you would get one of these in Germany but Maxdry Octopus Dryer | Canadian Tire These are for winter boots, but they work great for neoprene if you use them with the heat off. My gloves and boots are dry by morning.

    Question about comfortable depth

Quickly surfacing is generally a very poor option for most scuba emergencies. I am very comfortable at most any depth as long as I have a dive buddy who sticks close to deal with any such emergency without having to immediately surface. I would have to say that 20 ft from the surface is about...

    Safety stops

I read a study once (sorry I can't find it right now) where divers were subjected to chamber depth for 24 hours, and then surfaced, and monitored for decompression sickness. I believe the depth for which you couldn't get bent was something like 6m (18 ft). ---------- Post added April 19th...

Question about PADI E-Learning, and training

One of your local dive shops should be able to work out something with you so that you can fit the classroom work to your own schedule. Most of the knowledge stuff can be done through self study using the open water manual, and then just verified by the instructor. E-learning will basically...

    Help for a nose breather?

I have similar trouble as I am a nose breather. It's more natural for me to exhale through my nose, and most people do when they swim. It does make mask fitting more difficult as the simple suction test is no longer all telling. Some masks seal better under these circumstances, but the only...

    EANx MOD @ altitude

And you don't have to worry about whether the depth gauge is calibrated for salt or fresh water, and you don't have to worry about the exact ambient atmospheric pressure but yes, your calculation is not inaccurate. I did not realize that my comment could be interpreted that way. Sorry.

    EANx MOD @ altitude

That is the thing. We don't actually measure the distance from the surface (I have never seen anyone dive with a tape measure), but rather we measure the pressure using a depth gauge. The correct MOD should therefore be calculated based on how your depth gauge is calibrated, rather than based...
