Fatality Western Australia & Sat divers injured

Yep, a LOT of effort goes into securing these things, from all parties involved. Of all the risks to worry about when flying, someone maliciously taking control of the aircraft's systems from somewhere outside of the flight deck isn't one of them.

Help understanding dive planning for new technical diver

If you're a newly certified technical diver, wasn't this covered by your instructor throughout the course? Seems bizarre that you would be left to figure this out on your own? General rules at this level are; Plan to reach your first gas switch using only 2/3rds of your back gas In-case of...

Fatality Western Australia & Sat divers injured

The original claim was that the person (Chris Roberts) was on an Airbus. Unfortunately upon investigation it was found that the carrier he was flying with didn't operate Airbus, so the story changed to Boeing. Regardless, the 'flight functions' he managed to compromise was merely telemetry -...

    Exploding Tank in Utila

My understanding was that ECT can be used to detect flaws in cracks in all manner of metallic criteria. Just because its used to detect SLC in 6351, doesn't mean it can't be used to detect flaws in other materials. Just my understanding though - can't say I know what I'm talking about :D

Choosing new fins - Apeks RK3

My wife has a set of RK3s. I've tried them and they're quite floppy compared to my Slipstreams. Not a huge amount of power available, but lots of control. I wouldn't choose them for anything other than minimal current, single cylinder diving. I think the design with a stiffer material would...

What dive site is at the top of your bucket list?

    HMHS Britannic. One day... *swoon*

    Problem with my Poseidon

Surely the buoyancy change is the same on both ali and steel cylinders? The swing is caused by the amount of gas used, not the material from which the cylinder is made.

Ascent rate below off gassing ceiling?

Yes. While ascending you are still decompressing on the move. If you ascend to fast to a given depth, you won't have had enough to time off-gas sufficiently to avoid exceeding critical tissue tensions, resulting in bubble formation. Its important to remember that while some tissues may indeed...

    DCS--Playing the Odds

You are of course correct that a higher risk profile dive will result in a higher probability of DCS - that much is obvious. What I was trying to illustrate is that this notion that some people seem to get from reading statistics is that your chance of getting DCS increases with every dive you...

    DCS--Playing the Odds

I guess a little of the gambler's fallacy comes in also. Ignoring the actions a diver can take to change their risk profile, as already discussed in this thread, and assuming a fixed probably of getting bent, you still aren't more likely to get bent on dive 2000 than you were on dive 1000 (all...

ICD - preventing Inner Ear DCS

I'd be interested in the outcome of this also. I've been taught about theory of ICD, and the mitigation strategies, but I'm left wondering about exactly when it becomes a risk factor. Is it something to consider on all normoxic trimix dives? Only ones pushing limits? Or does it really...

    Got a reverse block

I'm not convinced by this, particularly for ear problems. Surely the negative pressure will simply close the Eustachian tubes further?

    Are Suunto Zoops super conservative?

Well if he owns his own company, and changed the settings on your computer with complete confidence, that obviously makes him an expert in deco theory, and nothing could possibly go wrong...

    Are Suunto Zoops super conservative?

My experience with Suuntos has been that they are pretty fair, if dived well. What will really limit the NDL they suggest is if dived poorly (saw tooth profile, fast ascents, short SI etc.).

Drysuit, Travel and Liveaboards - advice?

You could wear your drysuit on the aircraft to prevent damage... ;)

Injury off St Abbs Head - Scotland

A friend of mine was on this boat, and brought the affected diver to the surface, but wasn't his buddy. Apparently the diver encountered problems immediately upon descent.
