    Kona Trip August

Daytime shallow dives... my personal favorites were Golden Arches, and Coral Garden (by the airport).

Help, where to dive on Big Island?

My personal favorite is Jack's Diving Locker, great op, great guys, very professional. None of their regular daytime two-tank dives go deeper than 60ft, and the manta ray night dive is run at 45 ft (though it's a good idea to watch your depth carefully if you do go off and explore outside the...

Diving Anacapa on a Spring Tide?

I've already posted this question on the general dive forum, and someone suggested making it region-specific, so here goes: I'm going to Anacapa on August 9th, a full moon, and a really strong shift between daytime low and high tides predicted. I know that some dive desinations are really...

How important is it to check tides when boat diving?

"Channel Islands" is actually a bit of a misnomer. They're in the middle of nowhere, the only channel is the eleven mile wide one between them and the mainland. The islands themselves have a couple of bays though, and those contain some of the nicer dives.

How important is it to check tides when boat diving?

Well yeah, but stronger currents could eliminate otherwise great sites from the agenda.

How important is it to check tides when boat diving?

Spring tides have both higher highs and lower lows than usual. Thanks everyone for your help. Just one question though: if there are no tidal currents in the open ocean, than why do pelagic fish (like the famous whale shark attracting cubera snapper of Belize) and certain coral reefs only spawn...

How important is it to check tides when boat diving?

I have a boat dive booked for the Northern Channel Islands off California. Only after I booked the boat dive did I find out that I'm going on what looks like a spring tide (August 9). Do most divers check the tides before going out on a dive boat? Are spring tides as much a concern for boat...

Follow-up to my last question....this one re: Hot Snorkeling Spots

On the Big Island: Kahalu'u Bay is awsome, Place of Refuge (Two Step) is also beautiful, but it doesn't get any shallower than 8 ft., I don't know what your standards for "shallow water" are. Place of Refuge is a bit of a drive south of Kona. There's one spot that the locals and guide books like...

    Turtle ID please

A green turtle would be skinnier and would lack that distinctive beak.

GC Shore dives & shallow boat dives

I spent four days diving with Ocean Frontiers. I personally prefer shallower depths, so I made prior arrangements that I would seperate from the group when they went deeper. My deepest dive was 65 ft, I honestly feel that there's more to see on top of the wall than down the face (on one dive, I...

    HELP!!! Where next?

I've never been to the Indian Ocean myself, but to my knowledge a lot of Brits enjoy the Maldives. Can anyone who actually dives that part of the world back me up on this?

    Split fins or Blade fins

I tried force fins (separate category), and despite having a strong following in the diving community, I do believe that force fins suck. Split fins all the way!

Anyone dive without a snorkel on?

I personally prefer the option of having a snorkel when diving abroad, but I never use it in California. Snorkels make it so much easier to get stuck in the kelp.

Best snorkelling from the beach anywhere

Where in Bora Bora? Is it good in front of any of the resorts? I've snorkeled on Grand Cayman and that was pretty interesting.

    Anacapa Condtions

By the way, have the sea lions been around? I've gotten mixed info about whether or not it's possible to dive with sea lions during their breeding season June-July. I'm going on July 26 and am wondering whether there's any chance of running into some.

GC Dive Report - Planning my next trip!

I'm glad you enjoyed your trip. What kind of your sharks did you see? When I was diving the East End (which was supposed to be shark central) and the sightings were kind of sporadic.
