Grand Cayman -- What end in Feb?

I've never been to the East End in the winter, but I can attest to the fact that Ocean Frontiers is a great dive operation that offers some great dive sites. Weather in April was pretty calm. The Reef is a great resort.

    Could this be true?

Since starting this thread, I actually talked via e-mail with Ben McNeil, the gentleman mentioned in this article. He said while calcification rates will improve significantly, there will also be bleaching of certain species, so the net effect on coral reef health will likely still be negative...

    First sea lions, now Shamu

This kinda goes back to the whole discussion(s) as to which animals are and are not well suited to captivity. I don't pretend to be an expert on that subject, but killer whales probably belong to the second group under most circumstances.

    Could this be true?

Just one more quick (and maybe trivial) question to fuel discussion. All of the global warming articles cite a simulation that predicted a water temperature rise of 2 degrees Celsius (I know how us divers all hate metric). Does anyone know how much of a change in water temperature the 1998 El...

    Could this be true?

Now, there are a couple of reasons I'm skeptical about this site. This theory makes sense to me personally, but the main reason I'm skeptical is that, if heat is good for coral, why did El Nino wipe out half of the reefs in the Indo-Pacific in 1998, seems paradoxical, doesn't it? Also, the web...

    Could this be true?

While I do consider myself an optimist, this seems a bit too much: http://www.scienceagogo.com/news/20041112235853data_trunc_sys.shtml Is there any truth in this? I'm a firm believer in the resiliance of nature, but imho it's a bit too optimistic to think that coral reefs could actually...

Advice wanted on Oahu and Big Island

Advice for the BI: Jack's Diving Locker www.jacksdivinglocker.com is great with noobs. I got certified with them. The DM's are all great people, and will really hold your hand through the process if neccessary. They're also great at spotting interesting marine life. This op a policy of shallower...

Differences between commuter and jet aviation

This has been a topic that's always interested me. Pick any country with that's the home of a major jet airline that has a separate domestic carrier (example: Fiji with Air Pacific as their jet carrier and Air Fiji as the main domestic/ regional airline). Would the jet company and the...

OW Certification on the Big Island

I second that recommendation. I got certified with Jack's Diving Locker www.jacksdivinglocker.com a few years back. I enjoyed the people, the diving, the experience. The manta ray dive is awsome, though be ready for a little bit of surge (not too bad). They have a policy of shallower guided...

    Fiji it is, but where...

It may be a good idea to read to local news before making any decisions, like www.fijitimes.com or www.fijilive.com . Both of these websites seemed pretty matter-of-fact and unconcerned about the whole situation (though I wouldn't disregard it). I've never been to Fiji and am also trying to...

Dive Boats - San Diego area

I personally love the Dive Bliss www.divebliss.com (also listed on www.oeexpress.com ), but from what I heard they were experiencing mechanical problems and were temporarily out of action. That was months ago, they're probably up and running by now (you might want to pop them an e-mail before...

    Ears and diving

That's perfectly natural. This is something that happens to every diver. When the pressure in the environment is different from the pressure behind your ear drum, your ear drum will flex in or expand out depending on where the greater pressure is. When you're diving, there is a lot of water...

    Kona Diving in September

I recommend Jack's Diving Locker www.jacksdivinglocker.com . I got certified with those guys a few years ago and have great memories from that experience. It's not one of those six pack ops, but even on the big boats, they try hard to make it a personalized experience. They have a wide variety...

Is it just me or do you feel the same way when diving?

There are few things I dislike more about diving then the hassle and nerves involved with getting my gear together and setting up on an over-crowded California dive boat. The awsome dive that follows always makes up for it though.

    Grand Cayman family friendly resorts?

I second that. The Reef Resort www.thereef.com.ky and Ocean www.oceanfrontiers.com are a great combination. The beach at the Reef is great for small kids and has good snorkeling. There's even better snorkeling at nearby Queen's Monument. There isn't much variety with restaurants, but Portofino's...

    Recommendation requested for Kona Diving?

While 6-pack dive ops are generally awsome, you cant go wrong with Jack's Diving Locker www.jacksdivinglocker.com . They are one of the larger ops on the Big Island, but they should suit your needs perfectly. All dives are guided with two DM's in the water at all times (no more than 6 divers per...

How to handle "friendly" or "curious" sea life?

Want to piss off a garabaldi? Find its "nest", then take a handfull of sea urchins and put them in the nest. The garabaldi will methodically pick up each of the sea urchins, carry them a good ten feet away, and place them on the bottom there. Afterwards it will make sure you dont do it again...
