    Lake Travis

Here's an overlay of a LCRA topo I did in Google Earth (need Google Earth to view). http://fileblaze.com/new/file.php?file=files/310307/1175363417/R96C78+LCRA+Topo.kmz Click on the hard-to-find download link to open. Did the best I could getting it to line up. Attached is the JPG export.

A very bad week in Florida

It may or may not be as dangerous (accounting for the number of hours driven/dived) but Florida is unlikely to close I-10 if there are too many accidents.

Can you monitor your tank pressure mentally?

It takes time and familiarity with the tanks you are diving. In my 104's, I know my pressure to well within 100 psi quite consistantly (of course a 100 psi in 104's gives quite a large margin for error). When diving anything else (e.g. singles or double 80's), I'm not nearly as accurate.

A very bad week in Florida

Well, I have no problem with drill-sergeant style. My cave instructor actually was a drill-sergeant in a former life and we all heard that voice on one or two occasions.

A very bad week in Florida

From what little I know of OW instruction, I believe the rule is never criticize without praising as well. We wouldn't want to discourage anyone :) Cave instruction, it seems, should be more drill-sergeant style. While cave diving isn't nearly as dangerous as being a marine in Iraq, I believe...

A very bad week in Florida

In the instructors defense, the student was attacking his ability to make a living by posting this here and on Decostop. Shouldn't the instructor be able to respond in defense? Perhaps posting his entire log is a bit over the top but surely he must do something in response.

A very bad week in Florida

While I may have overstated the seriousness for effect, someone who is unable to control his buoyancy and is causing low-viz conditions is a hazard to the safety of everyone else in the cave hense the stress on anti-silting techniques and proper buoyancy control in cave training.

A very bad week in Florida

After reading both versions, I find it hard to simply take your interpretation of events at face value. Regardless, if your buoyancy issues were anything like those described (you even admit to the hand plant, a life threatening error in a cave), it sounds as if you need remedial work and...

Opinions on the Dive Rite Nitek Duo?

I think they were having problems with some of the early runs.

    June in Cozumel!

Well, Andrew is a cave diver so I know he loves the stuff he just never gets a chance to do it. If you do only one cave, I'd recommend NaHoch.. take the first jump to the left (and then I think another jump to the left, can't remember), there's some very decorative formations back there, a...

    Northern Florida (East Coast) QUESTION!!!

I'm not a professional but I would hope you wouldn't teach any specialties that you don't have non-teaching experience and true interest in. You would certainly be doing your students a disservice if you taught them wreck or cavern and the only time you wreck or cavern dive is when teaching a...

    Northern Florida (East Coast) QUESTION!!!

PADI has a cavern specialty and to the best of my knowledge, you have to be full cave to teach it (a rather new requirement I believe).

    snakes ?

In water encounters? Saw a snake while diving in Florida (fortunately for me, the aligator ate him before he got to close :) ). Never seen one in Texas (it helps that the viz is usually less than 10').

    Possum Kingdom?

I don't know the instructors but it's a typical Texas lake. It's going to be cold this time of year, especially at 40' under the first thermocline. The viz will probably be 3 - 8' depending on rain and other factors. Lots of fish unless an algae bloom killed them all off - bring hot dogs.

    Cavern in a Zeagle Ranger?

Your zeagle will get you through cavern just fine. I know a guy who did cavern and intro in a ranger with double 80's without any problems. He's since upgraded to 108's and a bp/w. With higher volume steel tanks, you'll probably want a bp/w but since you *just* bought the thing, well, might...
