    My First Near OOA

The kelp did get old pretty quick. The captain did his best to keep the entry and exit points out of the salad but he wasn't always successful. There was one dive subsequent to this one when I really didn't know how far away the boat was until I touched it. It is surprisingly easy to mistake the...

Now you tell me. Where were you a week ago? :)

    My First Near OOA

Actually I don't blame my buddy at all. My desire to smack him with a weight belt was an expression of my emotional state at the end of the dive. My buddy was right, I should have just left him instead of wasting my air trying to get his attention. I also should have done what I normally do...

    My First Near OOA

You are probably right but remember at this point I was under weighted, had just experienced a pretty much uncontrolled ascent from 30 feet, and until I surfaced was unsure how far I was from the boat. Not to mention I had ditched a buddy for the first time ever. Even if I could descend far...

    My First Near OOA

Our first dive ended with me at 1200 psi and still negative. We called the dive a little early because there wasn't any structure to hide lobster. It was all sand. After this second dive I added an extra 4lbs and was fine. I also insisted from that point on that when I hit 1000 psi it was...

    My First Near OOA

I had my first near out of air experience on a recent dive of Santa Cruz island. I was diving with a new buddy, this was our second dive together, in cold kelp infested water. The dive plan was quite simple: descend to the bottom, 30ft, head toward shore until you encounter structure, explore...

    Kona or California?

Sounds lovely. Our visibility was usually 6-8 feet at the bottom, 1-3 at the surface. We didn't see the sun for four days. :)

    Kona or California?

Thanks. The kelp got old after the first three entries and exits with the swim step right in the kelp. Getting hung up in the kelp wasn't a big deal but add in current or strong surges and it got old really fast. The kelp was beautiful as long as it wasn't in my way then it was just a pain in...

Suggestion on a Key Largo Dive Shop?

Silent World and Rainbow Reef are both top notch.

Yes or No to a Lumbar Pad?

I have both Hollis and DSS plates. I don't use a pad with either. In fact when I asked Tobin, owner of Deep Sea Supply, for a pad for my DSS plate his response was "you couldn't pay me to sell you a pad". If you feel like you really need one I suggest DIY before spending $$ on an "official" pad.

    Kona or California?

Well I'm back. Interesting trip. Short version: I should have gone to Kona. Long version: I learned a great deal about what kind of diver I am and what kind of diving I prefer. Adjusting to the cold water took a couple of dives but wasn't a major factor. The strong surge, current everywhere...

Scubapro Seawing Nova vs Mares Quattro vs Aqualung Slingshot

The posts concern me as well. I had the same reaction to the bands on the Slingshots. The Novas seem like a cousin to the Forcefin.

    Northeast Scuba Supply Trader Rating?

I received mine on Tuesday. I am sure glad I found this place. NESS is the only place I could find that still had Dive Rite LED LUX canister lights in stock. Every other shop is back ordered and waiting for the updated model from Dive Rite.

    My First S90

I will definitely be shooting RAW. Flash memory is cheap. I have more SD cards lying around from conferences and giveaways that I have pennies in my piggy bank.

Scubapro Seawing Nova vs Mares Quattro vs Aqualung Slingshot

I wouldn't buy the Nova simply because it is a brand new design. It will take a few years of tweaking before we know if the design has any longevity to it. I have no opinion about the other two.

    First Kelp Dive

That is quite a recomendation. Thank you. I have yet to read a negative comment about Truth Acquatics. I admit I was unsure at first about how good an outfit it was as I had nothing to measure it against. All of my diving so far has been in FL with Silent World and others like them.

    My First S90

Thanks Pat. RAW is something I already picked up on and will definitely make sure the camera is set to record in that format. As for strobes, I looked at the price and decided to wait. No point in buying strobes until I can master keeping a subject in frame long enough to get a decent shot. Dirt...

    My First S90

This being my first time under with a camera auto will suit me just fine. I need to learn how to handle the extra cognitive load of diving with a camera and lining up for a shot before messing with settings. I chose the S90 because it seemed like a good camera to learn on with a feature set that...
