Trip Report May 2022 - Grand Cayman

Many folks talk about how stressed COVID was, but other than that, you wouldn't really know it had been here, other than the need to wear masks and sanitise.

Thank you - that was a total typo! I have corrected it.

Trip Report May 2022 - Grand Cayman

I spent 3 weeks on island for the first time since COVID hit. The focus wasn't all on diving, as I had a bunch of business tuff to do on island, but I was able to get some diving in. I have 3 more days left on island but the weather forecast isn't great, so I doubt I will be underwater again...

    IRDA and Windows 11

I read the excellent thread on IRDA with Windows 10, but am having trouble making this work with Windows 11. I have enabled the optional IRDA stack, and rebooted. I own the UWATEC IRDA USB dongle, and every time it's coming up with "Unknown device" in the device manager. I have tried...

    Question Sargassum Report?

On island right now. SMB is completely clear of it. I have been to Sunset House, and Macabuca for shore diving and they also are clear. Did a boat dive out on the north wall this noontime and there were some mats floating out there but it didn't spoil the dive - in fact there were about 50...

    Trip Report Sunset House

Just a follow-up on the mask requirements, based on what I have seen in the past 2 weeks here... bars and restaurants are definitely optional. Grocery stores, and most other stores (the phone store, several gift shops, etc.) have all been mandatory and everyone seems to be wearing them.

Cobalt Coast Resort up for sale

When I stayed there the first time it was before Macabuca was there and they had unlimited shore diving from Cobalt Coast and Turtle Reef. Then they build Lighthouse Point so there was unlimited shore diving at Cobalt Coast and Lighthouse Point. Gave some flexibility if the weather didn't...

    Trip Report Sunset House

I am on island right now. Masks are required in every store I have been in to so far (grocery, phone, liquor stores, etc.). Restaurants don't seem to be quite as insistent, although most of the staff wear them.

Cobalt Coast Resort up for sale

Here is the listing: CIREBA So US$10 mill will buy you a dive resort. What isn't clear from the listing if whether Reef Divers are remaining on site, or if that price is to buy the dive op too. Does anyone have any insights as to what is going on here?

Grand Cayman Dive Shop (Boat + Shore Diving) Recommendations

I completely agree that this is a great shore dive experience - the setup there is wonderful. A good second is Sunset House and MyBar. I don't rate the dive quite a good, but the bar and food there are excellent.

Grand Cayman Dive Shop (Boat + Shore Diving) Recommendations

Just an FYI - Coconut Bay shore dive is only available to people staying on the property and owners. I am an owner there and there have been major concerns raised about liability, as this isn't dive op but private property, maintained by the condo association (aka the STRATA). I strongly...

Cayman possible border reopening without quarantine by April or May!

I have been going to the Cayman Islands since 2005 - I got OW certified there - and now own property there. I have seen how the Cayman Government works, and I would absolutely go with DiveTech's Tony's assessment on this one. Until the Cayman Government actually passes whatever it needs to...

Dominican Republic in december, dive shop recommendations?

My one experience there was north shore - tried to dive out of Luperon but conditions were really nasty. Ended up going out of Sosua Bay. Really shallow with not a lot to see - when the "highlight" was feeding super-aggressive sergeant majors with bananas that the dive master brought with him...

    COVID-19 quarantine Insurance

Cayman Islands doesn't require any Insurance. That's because they aren't open for tourists and right now EVERYONE has to quarantine at their own cost. So I hope that Cayman isn't the one on your soon-to-visit list tbriggsnh. The situation isn't likely to change until early next year and the...

Cayman possible border reopening without quarantine by April or May!

For USA-based divers, St Croix becomes far more attractive due to the fact that it's not an international flight and there is less testing required. They have seen a massive influx of divers this year, and for local reasons not related to COVID, can't get the staff to put on as many boats as...

Cayman possible border reopening without quarantine by April or May!

Honestly, this fits with the super-conservative nature of the island. Right now they say they don't even know how the community spread happened, and that has to be worrying for them. My guess is that someone broke quarantine and spread it. I'm not surprised. I don't know what they expected -...

The Reef Divers trip was far from smooth - I heard they had to turn back to Cayman and then some had to quarantine for 2 weeks before they could do anything!
