I didn't know you could easily get in the water there - I snorkelled up that way a while back to investigate and I remember ironshore underwater for quite a ways out... how was it?
..aaaand things come full circle!
When I first came to Cayman this was Divetech's set up - primary was CC, then Turtle Reef (pre-Macabuca days) as the secondary, and West Bay Dock, or Morgan's Harbour, depending on conditions, for boats.
I have been there a few times to snorkel. It's not diveable as it's way too shallow, but it's a really nice snorkel when there are no currents. The barrier reef protects from the majority of the wave action.
I have done an afternoon wall dive with LTD - 2 tanks, just like a classic morning dive. I dive Nitrox on days like that, which helps with bottom time.
Talking with local boat owners I can confirm that the dive site hasn't really returned to activity since COVID when they weren't being fed. I don't know which dive ops are still doing trips out there.
When it comes to the sandbar (which isn't really a "snorkel site" - you are only in 3 feet of...
I have done quite a few dives with CUD - you don't have to wear the bone conduction headset if you don't want (it hooks in on your mask strap right over your ear.
Brad most definitely isn't chatty underwater - it's literally just naming things as he sees them - that has been a help in the past...
I'm not a fan of morning dives that require me to be up before it's light to get ready and get to the dock, so I prefer afternoon dives.
There aren't a lot of ops that routinely do afternoon 2-tankers in my experience - most do 1 tank. Living the Dream does for sure. Cayman University Divers...
Price comparisons can be tricky. I have heard of people from Toronto say that prices on island are comparable to their home. I have found high quality meat here at less than I pay at home.
Eating out can very quickly get pricy, it's true. A lot of people rent condos so they can get in the...
A solid choice - I think for mixed divers and non-divers North West Point gives a nice mix of relative quiet, easy access to shore dives, West Bay Dock or Morgans for boat dive pickup, and very quick access to Seven Mile Beach, groceries, restaurants, etc. for those that are stuck with a...
My favourite publicly-accessible shore dive on Grand Cayman is Turtle Reef/Macabuca. Very easy access to the mini wall, great setup facilities, they don't charge extra for weights, the reef there is about as good as you will find on island based on what I have seen.
Coconut Bay is only for...
Thanks for the report - I didn't notice you mentioning the shore dive at Macabuca - Turtle Reef. Based on the shore dives I have done that is the most "fishy" shore dive that is available to the public - massive schools of fish, stingrays that aren't shy, turtles, grouper, you name it - plus...
It was our second choice after one of our group got injured so we backed out of going to Saba until she was better. We stayed in Grand Case and dove with Octopus Divers (who I believe are no longer operating there). It was all boat dives in the bay there, and it was decent, but nothing really...
OK thanks for all the answers so far. Some great ideas.
We aren't really looking for a dive resort because we want to do other things as well - local culture, and the like, but diving is a very important part.
So staying in a hotel or AirBnB or the like would be good for us.
So far I have...
I knew I had forgotten a destination on that list - went to St Croix, USVI last year and really enjoyed it! I have edited my original post. Sorry about the brain fade. :-)
I would like to ask the help of my fellow divers on Scubaboard about where we should go next, in February 2023. Two adults, that enjoy diving, but also enjoy going out to good restaurants and trying local food. We want to stick to the Caribbean, and are looking for a new destination to try for...
Possible yes - have you seen anything reliable that says it is, though? We can speculate forever on things - poverty due to COVID, illegal immigrants and so on... suggest we don't start unfounded speculations
Just got a confirmation email this morning from Reef Divers that the dive shop and the resort will be closed November 19 this year. It has been sold to a "private undisclosed buyer". They say they want to use the proceeds to reinvest in their other 3 dive resorts on the sister islands and...
