Advice, please! Menjangan or Amed/Tulamben in Bali for rookie divers?

They are both so great! But if you only can choose one, I'd go with Tulamben/Amed. Simply because its almost all shore diving. As a new diver, you will be able to get more dives in, practice more, plan your own dives, and see some amazing creatures.

    Wing size question

I have quite a few Hollis wings, and Hollis Stainless Steel plates and a Hollis AL plate. The corners are bent away from the body and the cosmetic finish on the plates is very nice. For all around diving I use the S-25 (25lb lift) wing. When Im diving cold water, with drysuit and thick...

    Fin recommendation

My vote, hands down is for the Hollis F2. Light weight, small, efficient. Best fin I've ever used for back kicks and directional kicks.

What type of wetsuit for Bonaire?

Last time I was there I wore a 3mm full for morning dives and then added a 5mm vest for afternoon and evening dives. I always wear a beanie as well. My dives averaged 75 - 90 minutes, so even in 80 degree water I was getting a bit chilled by the end of each dive.

    BC sizing question

Hard saying without knowing what kind of BC you are looking at. Generally, I would go with the smaller size. A loose and sloppy fitting BC is no fun. You have likely read people's advice about backplate/wing/harness systems. Among many other advantages, they are infinitely adjustable. Zeagle...

Considering going to a wing or BP\W - Soliciting opinions on my reasoning

We use the Hollis Ride for Instruction with our new students. It is a nice system, but the wing itself could be improved. Without going into detail, I wouldn't recommend it as your primary system. I personally dive with a Hollis Backplate and the new S-Wing. I have the aluminum plate with...

    PADI vs NAUI

In debating whether or not a specific rescue skill should be taught by NAUI or PADI, and attempting to establish the superiority of said agency based upon that one skill, I feel that the thread derails and loses sight of the big picture. A noob wondering which agency to choose, should ask a few...

    PADI vs NAUI

Hmmm, if the individual dive company and individual instructor are removed from the equation, then I might agree. But since you can't separate the quality of the program or the quality, commitment and teaching skills of the Instructor, then I disagree. I'm not required by PADI to pass anybody...

    Honeymoon Dive Resort Suggestions?

Bali has great shore diving on the north east coastline. Tulamben is famous for the USS Liberty wreck. Mimpi has a beautiful property right on the beach in Tulamben as well. You can arrange for Mimpi to pick you up at the airport, take you to Tulamben, then after a few days, to drive you to...

Honeymoon Romantic, Super Special. ....and great diving with big stuff (and macro!) Of the following, all are wonderful places and reflect different time commitments and budgets, but my wife and I agree that the most romantic and memorable was Bali and Mimpi Menjangan. Our Bungalow had an...

    Suggestions for Scuba Challenge?

Greetings, I thought I'd reach out to SB for some fun ideas and discussion. In the interest of bringing landlocked divers together, improving skill sets, and promoting diving, we have been running monthly scuba challenges in a large 25 meter x 20 meter x 4 meter pool. So far, the contests...

    Good fins for petite woman

I suggest a paddle style fin over a split fin. Also for a petite woman, I suggest a lighter weight fin than Jetfins or Hollis F1s. These fins are relatively lightweight, are effective for frog kicks, scissorkicks, back kicks and modified kicks. These are a little stiffer and more powerful, and...

Fatality Off Miami Beach - Florida

In trying to make some sense of the information and wild commentary in this thread, it seems comparing and contrasting to like experiences could be helpful. Female Diver Missing on The Yukon, San Diego

Based on the information released from Waterhorse, it was a Wreck Specialty Course. There was no mention of agency. One could argue that the Wreck Specialty Course (whichever agency) is an experiential step toward becoming an "Advanced Diver."

Female Diver Missing on The Yukon, San Diego

The Yukon (at left) is a very nice wreck covered with strawberry anemone, nudis, various crabs, and the spectacle of the wreck itself. I have found it to be beautiful, exciting, and interesting. It is deep, dark and cold, and there are often currents and surge. Proper planning, environmental...

Dangerous psychology- Diving beyond one's training

Some of the arguments that I have read here are mind boggling. If the arguments were taken to heart, why would anyone waste money and time on ANY kind of education when you can get onto the Internet for information or read a few books. If I really thoroughly read a few books and articles on...
