What do you do for Boat Diving specialty?

Nope, just the warning about no banana hammocks onboard.

Anyone come across an electric eel while diving?

Thank for the tip. I still haven't dived Del Monte. I'm too impatient to dive over sand! Which is probably why I've seen few bat rays, no big halibut, skates, or electric rays, but a bazillion sea lemon nudibranchs. Heh. I'll have to give it a whirl.

    Taking pictures in Bad ViZ

4-5 meters??? Hmph. Bad viz, my patootie. I dive Monterey. Try 4-5 feet, on occasions. Are you taking pictures with a strobe? The farther you can set the light source away from the lens, the better chance you'll have against backscatter. With bad viz, I try to do a lot of macro, but 5...

Anyone come across an electric eel while diving?

I almost got nailed by an electric eel when I worked in an aquarium due to an idiot knocking into the ladder I was standing on while I was feeding the eel. Yanked my hand out of the tank just in time to hear "SNAP!!!" from the voltmeter on the 'public' side of the tank. Never even seen an...

    Solo diving.. thoughts

I've made a few solo dives, though I wouldn't recommend it with my equipment set up (no redundant air source, thus the few times I've tried it, I've been very much "stupid diver"). I've also done a couple pre-arranged "same ocean dives". This is primarily when I dive with spearfishers, since...

What do you do for Boat Diving specialty?

I think they need a banca boat specialty training though. I've been boat diving since dive 15 or so, but that certainly didn't prepare me for the 3' backwards drop leading me to actually hit the bottom at 7'! I think in the boat diving specialty course they also teach you dive boat...

    Dive computers

For air diving, I got a used Dive Rite B'air off scubaboard which did very nicely, and only cost 100$. (I'm cheap). When I moved to nitrox, I got the Dive Rite Nitek, because it's a very nice computer, and it's very cheap for what you get. I prefer the wrist mount computer on one wrist...

    your last class

About three weeks ago. Completed my rescue class. Very useful. Now I'm trying to decide whether I really want to do DM or if I want to continue in the tech direction. I've been diving for 2 years and never stop learning!!!

Poll - how long did it take you to adapt from a jacket BC to a BP/W?

After one dive. I'd been diving in an ancient scuba pro that really squeezed my ribs. One the first dive with my DR, I had some trouble with teeter tottering, particularly on the descent, but still had a feeling I'd like it. By dive 2, I was in love!!!!!

Good bye friends.... Giant Pacific Octopus cycle of life.

I LOVE GPO's. Great picture series. I fell in love with these guys when we had a female at the science museum where I worked when I was a teenager. They're SO smart. They did have to tamp down the top of the aquarium to keep her from migrating. I fed the fish and when I fed her, I'd...

    Buddy on a runaway ascent.

Hmm... I've seen two runaway ascents and I've been on one. In the first case, I opted not to grab and met him at the surface. In the second case (chick grabbed the wrong button), two of us finning down weren't doing it, she wouldn't let go of me, and dragged me straight up to the surface...

LDS good experiences with Channel Island Trips

It's a great charter. I wouldn't do the "two person" bunk thing though if you're going with another person. The two person is smaller than a normal twin, and so it's coffin sized. It seemed to be about 50 percent larger than the one person while needing to be 100 percent larger. And you're...

    Small Car Diving

Mine's white, but I love it. Interest is killing the cost benefit, but it's a reliable little car that taught me to love a stick shift. Haven't had any trouble with it; keeping the maintenance up... Oh, the plastic on the trunk latch is cracked from me using it to put my kit on; it's the...

    Small Car Diving

I typically travel alone, and I'm diving perfectly well out of a two door Hyundai accent, and had greater success once I took over the payments for that car than I previously had with four doors with less trunk space, since the Hyundai is a hatchback. I've found that distributing the weight...

Monterey diving April 8 and 9?

I think I'll pass this weekend. Last time there was a bicycle race through there, I ended up trying to RUN across the street in scuba equipment dodging them to try to get to Coral Street. Talk about needing to stay in shape to dive!!! (Interestingly, I went to work the following Monday and...
