    regulator care

My Oceanic manual says soak, preferably under pressure for at least 1 hour. Don't press the purges then give a gentle rinse and allow to air dry away from direct sunlight. Also send to the shop for annual routine service and performance tests. I lay the whole set up down in my bathtub and set...

    Renting gauges and octo?

If you're not yet certified why buy any gear yet? Sign up for an OW course and try all thier stuff for free.. I'd think about maybe finding a second dive shop to see how they handle your situation. Does'nt sound like this shop and you are on the same wavelength. Find a shop that is staffed...

    Sealing soft weights?

White "dust" not "goop" as a possible reaction with strong chlorine. Not yet on our various size soft weight pouches...how about uncoated split shot used for fishing...I have some that belonged to my grandfather...must be 60 years old...no white "Goop" or "dust"...ask the guy for more details...

    Pro Plus 2 Problem

maybe a little off topic but I bought the correct cable and couldn't get any results on either my laptop or desk top. Something about the configuration of both computers that wouldn't allow communication with the Proplus 2. I got Oceanic involved, sent them the computer and cable...it worked...

First boat and saltwater dive - Weight differences?

I know I'm too late to do any good but I'm also at 28 lb with a 7mm farmer john, hood and gloves. When I got into salt water with a 3mm jump suit I was slightly heavy using 12 lbs and I, like you estimated I would need 18 lbs. In fresh water with the 3mm suit I'm at 10 lbs. I'd be interested...

places to learn to dive and vision questions

Check out SeavisionUSA.com. I have a very strong nearsighted prescription and they did a perfect job! It's all they do. The LDS charged me $230 but I later found out you can order direct from them at substantial savings in the $170 to 180 range plus they have a larger style selection.

what things do i need to know

I'd recommend the NAUI Scuba Diver package. It comes with a text book, DVDs, practice tests, a pen, a pencil, dive tables, stickers, etc. The DVDs are great! If you get it (SCUBA.com has great prices) I bet you won't wait 2 years till you get really wet:) Try one of those intro to diving...

    Water in ear????

"NEVER PUT ANYTHING smaller than your elbow in your ear"...the solutions are all a good plan but if you have impacted wax of any good size they might not work and could make things worse. Have your ears checked by you doctor at an annual physical or if you think you're in for a potential...

    Stuffy feeling in ear

Sounds like wax build up. I spend an enormous time on the phone in my work and my left ear accumulates a lot of wax. A definite problem for diving in fact it could be serious. Used to be I would need to get cleaned out every 3 to 5 years but once I started diving I have it done annually as...

    Fins getting stuck

Sounds mechanical. Are there ridges on the tred of your booties that can get interlocked with an edge or ridge inside your fins?

    Concerned about sharks? Odds?

I've been told that sharks don't like scuba divers under water because we are big, ugly and we make alot of noise. My experience so far is limited up close to nurse sharks one we were photographing under a rocky out cropping was quite large and certainly wanted nothing to do with us; bolting at...

Funniest Diving quotes you have heard

OK, this one's on me... It's my first ever wall dive and I'm on the edge of the platform; regulator in mouth, gauges in left hand, right hand on regulator with my prescription sunglasses on... The DM was perfect though. He waited until he saw that I had shifted all of my weight to my left...

    Silly octo question

the message I got a while ago was don't skimp on your life support systems and have regular routine maintenance done...makes sense:)

    buoyancy

My limited experience compared to the other posters here has taught me that proper weighting and breathing plus trim adjustments are the key to great buoyancy control. Had a night dive this year where I ended up in 3 ft of water with 110 lbs left in an AL80. I asked my Instructor who also...

    DAN Policy

From what I've heard about DAN they are an awesome provider of all sorts of backup for divers all over the planet. Are you a member? They send out a very good periodical called "Alert Diver" which I read cover to cover when I get it. I also purchased DAN Tags for my son and I. You wear them...

Nerdy Certification/Experience Question, but still curious...

hmm, after years I would first want my gear to have the routine annual maintenance that I already do. Would probably need to review my log book for how much weight do I need with which wet suit. The first time I took a break from diving it was October to April, about 6 months time. I was a...

    AOW "Specialties"

Another vote for NAV=most important unless you enjoy swimming on the surface in full SCUBA gear shark bait. I'm in the Buffalo, NY area and the Niagara rive drift is a gas of a thrill ride when the currents up and even when its not. A "must do" if you live in this area and even if you don't...
