    Antidepressants vs diving?

hi folks, i have a friend who has been prescribed an antidepressant to *reduce* serotonin levels (a comparatively unusual form of depression - too much serotonin) she'd love to learn to dive but apparently this medication is a contra-indicator; naturally i've forgotten the actual name of...

Depth when doing open water tests

ooa ascent exercises from 130ft sounds like a recipe for disaster! i could countenance military special ops or similar doing that degree of "hard core" exercise, but for recreational diving the risk is not justifiable. the only "deep" depth requirements are really for courses like AOW & "deep"...

    Underwater Nausea

motion sickness pills can have side effects like dehydration which can exacerbate the risk of decompression illness, but AFAIK the off-the-shelf kind are unlikely to have significant impact on recreational dives. i certainly take them (dramamine) before going on boat dives. if you can talk to a...

    Was I Narc'd?

    - so here's the weird thing: i don't dive "deep" (>30m) with any frequency at all, but the first time i did a 40m dive i "felt" normal at 38m, then dropped down another to 39m and suddenly got a warm glowing feeling rising through my body like i'd just knocked back 3 cognacs in quick succession...

    ikelite "pro" compass experiences?

hi folks anyone had an experience with the ikelite "pro" compass (IKELITE PRO COMPASS) ? it's difficult to tell but this looks comparatively compact (small) - which is a plus: anyone have a clue on the actual dimensions/bulkiness ? suggestions on other small/low-profile/low bulk dive...

    ikelite #3001 accessory case experiences?

hi folks, has anyone used the ikelite #3001 accessory case (ACCESSORY CASE) for storing keys, etc? my "clever" new car doesn't actually have a key hole, so even if i could get a "dumb" metal-only key cut, it would be of no use whatsoever. my key unit is 70mm x 35mm x 16mm (roughly 2.75"...

I want SCUBA to be my job...

afaik commercial, emergency services & military diving are all "jobs underwater", but none of them are really professional versions of recreational diving. at a presentation on police diving, the speaker told us that none of his team dived for fun: all their recreation was above the water...

    DM or Alternative

you could do worse than having a look at GUE fundamentals, especially if there's an instructor nearby. GUE-F includes intensive training on trim, streamlining, balance & stability in the water, and is an introduction into some of the considerations for tech. GUE Fundamentals | Global...

Fills in rural areas: Fire service? Hospitals?

i was going to suggest CFA - they're the most likely to have the sort of filling gear you need, although not sure what pressures they use.

New bc or backplate and wing

one thing to consider is that with many bp/w setups, there's not much room for pockets on the rig, so you'll probably want/need pockets on your exposure protection (wetsuit/drysuit) pockets are my main problem at the moment with my new bp/w

    Contaminates in tanks?

seems like good practice to me - they don't want to accept responsibility for a bad fill done by someone else.

    Stowing a (compact) camera

does anyone have suggestions (and preferably pictures) of how to optimally stow/manage a compact camera? most DIR-related camera management i've seen has revolved around relatively large equipment: video cameras, SLR's with external strobes, etc. all i have is a compact & no external...

    Mask fit & leakage

this (not shaving) used to be a problem for me, but it doesn't seem to be anymore. i think for this sort of thing masks tend to fit better over time, a bit like sneakers :P

Is anyone as mental as I am?

i'm happy to lend stuff to friends i dive with, but i'm not happy for them to take it away; i have more friends with no gear than gear to lend out, so i like to keep a hold on the few extra bits i have.

    Upside Down Diver!

another thing you can experiment with is the position of your legs. i found that my legs were too bent at the knees, such that my ankles were too close toward my head which threw off the balance. stretching my legs out so that my feet were no longer in line above my knees helps with being more...

    A Dangerous gas mixture

this isn't always practical; ensuring your isolator is open before doing your own test would catch the problem that occurred here, however. this sounds like an even better standard procedure.
