    How to conserve air???

These two have helped me greatly improve my usage. - At the end of each inhale and exhale, pause for just a moment. Don't HOLD your breath, simply... pause. This is something I learned while meditating years ago and it comes in handy. In 1-2-3-4; pause 1-2; Out 1-2-3-4; pause 1-2. - Slow...

    Getting Gear

Don't spend to much time fretting over what is the absolute best you can buy right now. This is your first set. If you love diving, regardless of how broke you think you are, it won't be your last. Walk into your LDS (or find one nearby you like and trust) and get their basic gear kit from one...

    dive lights...

Perhaps on both points, but the biggest value will be the latter: enhancing the chance you'll find a buddy if separated in low viz. The definition of a "good" light is variable. I bought a very basic light to start with and am now looking to upgrade. Confusing to say the least. Look for the...

Yesterday I feel I got lucky.

I second this. My first post OW cert dive in Cozumel was Palancar Caves (no real caves, but pass throughs). To 87 ft. Fast current, through some tight areas that require good buoyancy and control. It was incredible and I loved it. But so much can go wrong and when you are new; truth is you...

    Why Leave a Buddy?

They can't. The person who left me in a lurch had agreed to all the points I trotted out in a site plan/brief. And she deviated from the plan without indication as to her intent to do so, much less a reason why. (I called a dive [2nd dive of the day and conditions were deteriorating] after a...

    Why Leave a Buddy?

After an event that "opened my eyes" to the importance of being on the alert for red flags when diving with a new buddy (and feeling no shame about demurely refusing to dive with certain people), I realized that my end motivation is simple: I want to be well prepared not only for my own...

    Managing the addiction.

Sorry to bump up this old thread, but I wanted to clarify something. I probably didn't express it well. In those warm waters, our DM did something that is probably described as just "making good use of time/depth." Not really pushing it. I was diving my husband's Tusa IQ-800; it has...

    Why Leave a Buddy?

In this world, not just diving, there are people that feel (whether it's learned or innate, probably a little bit of both) a strong sense of leadership and responsibility. Those people make great buddies, because you know you can depend upon them. They won't decide to deviate just because they...

Yesterday I feel I got lucky.

Welcome, glad to hear you are okay. Lots of great advice already given by some great divers. You were very, very lucky. I wanted to pat you on the back specifically for coming here and for sharing your story. You've begun your first accident analysis. It's hard to admit that you made mistakes...

    Packing for a dive trip

I bought my husband a Dive Caddy bag for Valentine's Day. He loved it. We allowed a friend to borrow it, and he's getting one, too. I admit I"m thinking about it. The packing seems complicated, but do it once and you have an "Aha!" moment and then each time you pack it gets easier, faster, and...

Death of British Tourist in Galapagos

Reading about these incidents is chilling, but something I began doing as soon as I hit ScubaBoard. Not to be macabre, but to learn. Even as a newer diver, I find myself taking risks (mostly out of compacency, not an urge to push the envelope). Reading these reminds me that it only takes once...

    Dizzy after Dive

I've not experienced it (fairly new, have done a few dive trips w/ long flights afteward). Certainly could be inner ear related, though. The short answer: see your doctor. Explain your recent activities. He might refer you to an ear-nose-throat specialist (ENT). If he does, try to locate one...

Um... shouldn't an SPG go to a high pressure port?

No, that wasn't the case. But, on my part it was a last minute, "Whoops, someone needs X, too," so I take part of the blame. Someone was trying to do me a favor. I should have been smart and just rented a full reg setup. I love how a simple little question has taught at least a few of us a...

Um... shouldn't an SPG go to a high pressure port?

Thanks, Delta_P, that s'plains it. Cuz it IS ooooooold.

Um... shouldn't an SPG go to a high pressure port?

Very bizarre, then. I just wanted to make sure *I* wasn't crazy. I've always used consoles, not a standalone SPG so just wanted to make sure there wasn't something unusual. *sigh*

Um... shouldn't an SPG go to a high pressure port?

Dumb question of the night... a friend (for whatever reason) is lacking an SPG. I get a loaner from my LDS, and it's pretty ancient but... it connects to a low pressure port. WTF? I thought this would have to go to a high pressure port!? What's up with this?

The "Thanks" button is gone - Take II.

There's no way I can read 37 pages of comments today, so I'll just throw in my two cents. :-) I liked The Thanks Button (TTB). As a new contributor, that feedback was really encouraging to me -- encouraging that while new, I still had something of value to say and add. To see those who I was...

    Closed ladder with fins on?

All my boat dives have been in warm water destinations (Cozumel, Maui. I'll get a chance to get cooler in August when I do Channel Islands). Those were "take fins off, hand 'em up, climb up ladder" proceedures. WHY would going up a ladder with fins EVER be a good idea?

    Buddy Link

I might need my hearing checked, but my hubby and I both have and use tank bangers and... miss the message. A metal knife rapped on the tank... now that I hear. But anything else... EDIT: Ah, TS&M -- hoods! Of course that's the reason!
