With all due respect, I was pointing out that these "downsides" don't actually exist, not that these are "features" that you can't get elsewhere.
If you want to talk about features you can't get elsewhere lets talk.
1) you remove all that unnecessary neoprene bulk that you have to compensate...
Like that pocket on your BC? Fine, add it to your backplate webbing no big deal.

Other options include gluing a pocket to your wetsuit.

How much crap do you take...
I have been using one of these for my smb.
It bolts to the back of the plate and works great. Everything else is clipped somewhere. or bungied to the plate. but mostly clipped.
for the console holder. I prefer a bolt snap like:
Dive Rite Stainless Steel Medium Swivel Eye Bolt Snap #HW1026-1
either zip tied or a bit of cave line to the console.
Also this has been the best octo holder I have ever used:
Black Rubber Snorkel Keeper
actually I use one like this...
I used to keep mine zip tied to the corrugated inflation hose. mounted handle facing the power inflator. worked very well for me for years. I have since moved it to my waste a la DIR. but some BC's won't allow that, and the corrugated hose is pretty universal;
Pete, that is the same rig I am running, That sabertooth MB, I was weary about it with all the plastic, but it is really awesome. However, why not just run Windows in a virtual machine on one of your linux boxes? If I wasn't such a huge gamer I would be doing that.
Try this for win 8.

You should be much more comfortable with it after you get that. it will start win 8 in desktop mode.
(I run win 7 and Ubuntu exclusively on my non touch devices)
I hate how Microsoft has forced desktop and traditional laptop...
It sounds like the vest may be too big on you, I never had to tighten a snorkel vest before. and that includes the crotch strap. The crotch strap prevents it from riding up.
However, I did do an amazon search just now, maybe something like this would be better for you?

The only thing that needs to have any type of special cleaning is the tank, and that is only if the shop fills with 100% o2 and dilutes with air. Everything else on the market today that I know of can handle 40% or less EANx.
I would say most rentals provide a computer now a days. So you should be ok there (just make sure they explain how to use it before you dive)
Everything else is also rentable. However, remember everyone pees in their wetsuit, if that is a problem, that may be on your list.
The viz was amazing last weekend wasn't it? Probably the best visibility I have seen in a while. And some of the bluest water I have seen in the area in some time. It was nice not diving into the green abyss for once :)
I wanted to thank you all. I did get the XS mesh bag, and attached it to my plate today. It looks like it is going to be what I was looking for, and is going to work out way better than my makeshift ziptie solution.
