    What is "Gold Line"?

They are also testing color coded system arrows in some caves in Mexico, with colors indicating if the jump from that arrow is to the right or left. Not cookies, but in that general “color coding markers” theme…

arrived to a missed T: what to do next

Oh yes. And lines get changes as well, in the case I’m talking about we (me and a guide) got thrown off course because a T had been changed to a hidden jump. When we got back we compared notes, and figured that the jump was where we expected a T, went back and completed the traverse another day...

arrived to a missed T: what to do next

All responses show how important taking detailed notes as you go is. If you have good details on time, marker and directions then you should be able to work out what you should find 10-15 minutes down the “right” path, then make a judgement call, look for it and if you don’t reach it, head back...

    Preferred Sidemount Return Swim?

Surface swimming with sidemount tanks sucks big time and takes up a lot of energy, in any position. Unless it is a short swim, in which case backwards tends to be the most comfortable way to keep your head above water, I stay under water and swim normally.

    Tourist lost - Cozumel

The spot is also called Cantarel, though most dive ops (and DMs) do call it Eagle Ray point or Eagle Ray wall.

Question Anyone's tongue ever turn black?

You haven’t been licking your fingers to turn the pages on an ancient treaty on Comedy written by Aristotle, have you? That has been know to be problematic…

    What’s up with Scubaboard?

There could be a joke here about something being clean enough to eat off it, but of course I would not want to leave all of you fine people with that image…

    Do you tip your instructor?

I tip guides and instructors if they are employees or freelancers, not if they are the DS owner.

    What’s up with Scubaboard?

I’m not going back to reading the shampoo bottles when taking a dump.

Cozumel or Mahahaul? Diving, Hotel, Things to do?? Thanks!!

At certain times of the year, Mahahual is likely to be overrun by sargassum - and those times of the year look like they will be “most of it” for 2023.

Hi there! Another diver from SF here, though still very new to the city and happy to meet new dive buddies!

Question How old are you and how long certified? Poll- please take part!

38 years old. Dove a little bit in my teens back in the 90’s and early ‘00. Certified as an adult in 2019, have made about 200 dives in the past couple of years.

Any tips for staying relaxed and avoid tunnel vision while laying the line?

I’m working on this still, but I would stress the previous advice about stopping before each tie off and taking a second -or a minute- to stabilize, adjust buoyancy and catch your breath. Most of my mistakes during the course came from going too fast, and my instructor gave me the same advice...

Lessons What have you become entangled in?

True, but if you are not underwater knife fighting, are you really scuba diving?

Two days in Monterey with a non-diver

Thank you guys! Just got back, we had a great time. Those are some beautiful roads down there, and we had a blast at the aquarium. @Eric Sedletzky we ended up doing something very similar to that. That candy shop in fisherman’s wharf was a hit - I don’t go crazy about sweet stuff but my wife...

Two days in Monterey with a non-diver

Hello folks! I'm visiting Monterey for the first time this weekend and will be there on Friday and Saturday with my wife. We live in San Francisco, moved here a few months ago. While this is a non-diving visit, it is also a bit of "reconnaissance" for future diving weekends - and the more my...

    Sidemount SPG hose and routing

I use 6 inch hoses pointed backwards, as most in Mexico do. I push the tank down with my elbow when pulling the SPG up to check it, a bit annoying at first but I got used to it. Some use 9” hoses. I have tried it and it is much easier, though you have to make sure that you are tucking them back...

What do you love besides diving?

I love learning useless crap. Probably has to do with why I love diving, too.

DOWN CURRENTS -Any with true real-life experience?

I did once in Cozumel at the San Francisco wall. We had just splashed, were coming down to the top of the wall. It felt like I had somehow missed the top of the wall and was pushed out with two other divers. I realized I was not stopping normally, puffed the bc, still not stopping, looked at...
