Going tech - Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) testing?

Roughly one out of every four people have a PFO - in other words it's not a birth 'defect', but a normal anatomical variant. PFOs have been implicated in conditions where right to left shunting (or emboli) may cause problems (stroke and DCI), but whether closure is beneficial is a much more...

considering Aggressor II trip - minimum dives

Check with the operator. We went with Emperor Divers in December (great trip), and they grouped us with folks of similar diving level. All dives were guided, due to frequent strict dive plans (lots of current dives, relatively deep dives with reef hooks, etc); the exceptions were a few simple...

How much weight am I carrying?

Squats and deadlifts will do wonders. I was in decent shape before, but started weight training a couple of years ago. Investing time in gaining core strength (and legs, but that was never a weak spot for me) means exits are easier than ever. If you've never done any training of this type...

Scubapro Hydros Pro BCD - Monoprene attachment hole ripped

If hanging an empty BC on a hanger by the straps is a no-go, a rough shore dive entry with a steel 100 while scrambling around a little is bound to be problematic...or am I missing something?

Buy Sony RX100v or house my 5dmkii

My travel kit is an Rx100 mark I in an Acquapazza housing (lighter and smaller than a Nauticam, full controls, Alu housing) with a few second hand wet lenses. The mark II or mark IV/V would improve AF slightly I'd think. Size and price were the deciding factors for me; my topside cameras are...

Gear check and advice - wall of text haha

I would also go DST (I like the routing with the 5th port turret, but it's not critical) with XTX50. From what I've understood there isn't any real difference in performance from the XTX50 up (the 40 lacks a few adjustments) for the second stage, and the first stage performance is substantively...

Thinking about going to backplate & wing config for travel, what do I need to know?

I travel with a 3.5mm wetsuit and an AL plate, almost only ever dive AL80s, and - at my current body composition - need max 2lbs of trim weight, although I've dived without any ballast and it works fine as well. Just a little on the light side at the very end of a dive with a near empty tank..

If you weren't addicted to diving...

I only really dive in vacation, and I've got plenty of other time and money sinks. Mine are, in no particular order: - photography. Mostly travel and landscape. - travel. Because new places are fun. - guitar building. Mostly acoustics, electric is a little easier / more freedom, but I prefer...

Sony RX100 rigs? What do you have?

I have an rx100 mk I (And a spare, actually) in a bright red Acquapazza housing (which is excellent, and the smallest/lightest/best depth rated of the Alu housings, or was when I checked. Would buy again). I currently have a single Inon S2000 strobe on a ULCS/Nauticam ball arm setup, mounted...

    Weight System for BP&W

I haven't, but I don't own my own weights (holiday diving here). I also only need about 4lbs total for my 3.5mm full suit, which works perfectly in trim pockets for me, and integrated pockets work fine if I need a bit more.

    Weight System for BP&W

I have 4 lbs in weight pockets on the cam band and nothing ditchable for my 3.5mm wetsuit (not that much to compress at depth, so I'm comfortable without ditchable weight). I have weight pockets that mount on the waist strap and are bolted to the plate which I've used and work well for me...

    My Fitness Didn't Translate

I'll +1 the general fitness recommendation. Cycling is decent aerobic exercise, although more for endurance than intermittend bursts of speed unless you train that specifically. What makes cycling accessible (low joint impact, scalable) is also what makes it easier to not push yourself all that...

    Komodo, Raja Ampat or both??

Stick with one - we did 7 days in RA and 3 days in Komodo with three weeks of travel time - if I were to do it again I would spend extra days in RA and do Komodo on its own trip.

Rinsing your BCD with antibacterial flush?

Disclaimer up-front: I am a medical doctor, but I am not a microbiologist. I'm basing my position on a pair of Health Council of the Netherlands advisory reports from 2001 and late 2016 (governmental advisory body, recommendations based on current evidence and made by experts in the field)...

Rinsing your BCD with antibacterial flush?

I don't and won't be flushing my BCD with anything more than fresh water after diving (thorough) and an occasional wash (i.e. Detergent / shampoo) and the end of a trip and letting it dry fully. Disinfectants have little to no place in the home, in my opinion. Simply washing and cleaning...

    snorkel fins outperforming dive fins??

The main reason I have open heel fins is shore diving. Walking in with booties (especially on Bonaire, but everywhere really) = good. I'm fast enough with my Accels for he diving I tend to do. Sort of waiting for Revan to show up and start promoting monofins at this point... ;-)

    Mouthpiece options

It's not a comfobite. This is: Apeks Comfobite Mouthpiece I have it. I like it fine. Soft enough and comfortable.
