    What training agency

Following this path, where would the prospective DSO get the training/qualifications/credentials to conduct check-out dives and get the experience to take a student who is not a certified diver through scuba training? How would this DSO (who is not an instructor) get liability insurance...

    What training agency

I don't think it's an "If I feel the need" type of situation. It appears to be a requirement in the AAUS manual.

And that brings us back to a previous post...at what point do you satisfy requirement #4 below? This person should have broad technical and scientific expertise in research related diving. a) Qualifications 1. Shall be appointed by the responsible administrative officer or designee, with...

So, in your view, how would one become a DSO, if they are not an active instructor as required by the AAUS manual?

My understanding comes from Section 1.10, para. 2 of the current manual: "This standard sets minimal standards for the establishment of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) recognized scientific diving programs, the organization for the conduct of these programs, and the basic...

    What training agency

MY UNDERSTANDING: The AAUS manual is the minimum standards. Institutions can add to it, but can not subtract from it. I would think that AAUS would refuse membership to any institution that dropped any of it's requirements because then they would not be satisfying the minimum requirements. I...

    What training agency

I thought AAUS standards requires the DSO to be an active instructor. Is this not the case?

but a simple open water card is not offered by AAUS. I was targeting more recreational divers...not scientific or commercial divers. I know the DSO doing the scientific diver training can issue regular recreational cards from the training agency as well.

I know YMCA isn't current...but I included it just in case someone was certified through YMCA and still use that card to dive...HEY...Just noticed>> YMCA got a vote!! haha

    What training agency

So a diver can become a scientific diver with no c-card from NAUI, PADI or any other agency? Will a dive shop accept the AAUS card?

    What training agency

I'm just curious what training agency you used for your certifications. I'm confused about all the different agencies. Mostly NAUI and PADI. There's the long standing joke that PADI stands for Put Another Dollar In...but at least PADI is not ashamed to admit that it is a business and a...

$59 - w/2 Open Water Dives & Gear, Reg. $99 - Ocean Legends in Honolu

As mentioned earlier in the thread, this is a busy time for Hawaii diving. If you're coming in the fall, it's hit or miss on any particular day. You might get a crowded boat on a Tuesday or get a relatively empty boat on a Saturday...just depends on the day. But statistically (more like...

    Wearing mask backwards on forehead

Can anyone explain this to me? I've seen divers wearing their mask this way and it makes no sense to me. What is the purpose? Is there a real practical reason for this? Or has this become the "cool" way of wearing it while on the surface? Is it a Tec Diving thing and divers wanna show off...

Staying in the Kaneohe area - Any Dive Ops recommendations?

Most dive boat operators launch from three main harbors...Waianae, Kewalo and Hawaii Kai. Waianae would be the furthest from Kaneohe...the other two are about 20-30 minutes away...depending on traffic. Parking is easiest at Waianae and Hawaii Kai. All three offer great diving...wrecks and...

    Shore diving in east Oahu

well, you can't be a diver on Oahu and not ever dive Electric Beach. But that's on the west side and far from Hawaii Kai. In the summertime, diving the North Shore is must.
