    100 feet below

Good advice from those above. I second ianr33, do progressively deeper dives so you won't go beyond your training and feel uncomfortable - you are not trying to break any records here. I did my AOW in a midwestern quarry with 20 feet vis, temperatures in the 50's. We only went to 75ft. I'd read...

Best Way to Phuket from NY?

I second Vladimir's suggestion. If you're willing to pay a little more (~$1800 round trip) the fastest way may be to fly direct to Singapore on Singapore Airlines (18 hour versus 25+ hours on other airlines with 2 stop-overs), and connnecting on a short flight to Phuket on any of the regional...

    MAC users?

iBook G3 (circa 2002) PowerBook G4 (circa 2005) at work: Dual 2.7GHz PowerPC G5 always been a Mac user (since Apple II+ in the early 80's)

    easiest inexpensive computer

I second Charlie99 and Dive Right In: I've used Oceanic wrist dive computers in my 8 years of diving with minimal maintenance and no problems. My 7+ year old Oceanic Prodigy is still running great as back-up. I agree that you should consider a nitrox one so you don't have to get a new one once...

    Regulator comparison

Scubapro, Oceanic, Atomic, Apeks, Zeagle and many more companies all make good regs. I recently switched from oceanic Delta 3 (very good) to Atomic B2 (great). When you are comparing the good-performing models (where differences between regs is hardly noticeable to humans), it pretty much comes...

    Boyancy Question regarding extra equipment

I echo the other posters above. My 4 D-cell flashlight and camera+strobe are nearly neutrally buoyant. In fact the latter is slightly buoyant. Unless you're using professional UW photo equipment or lights, I doubt if they need to be factored into your calculations. The only piece of gear I add...

    Question About Regulator Store

I shop Leisure-Pro a couple of times a year for gear and accessories such as mask, snorkel, wetsuit, knife, light, bags, SMB, clips etc, which are real bargains compared to LDS prices, and they probably have more items in their inventory than all my LDSs combined. As folks above have said, even...

How many non-tech divers carry a pony bottle?

HI. I'm just replying to the original question by the poster. Me - rec diver, about 170 dives (mostly warm SW), recently bought a pony. Reason for buying a pony: 1. I don't have a regular dive buddy, usually pairing up with whomever the dive op/DM assigns me. Sometimes the DM doesn't assign me...

Is it my dive buddies or just me overreacting?

I second Diver0001's question - did you communicate on max depth prior to the dive? If it's a regular buddy, I think you both should work on communication and stress to him/her the importance of sticking to pre-agreed max depths. Also, it might help to get a tank banger to get your buddy's...

    please recommend some weight pockets

Thanks for catching that. I was just at LP's website to check on that and was about to correct it when I saw your post. I must say I like the XS Scuba pouch better (well constructed) than the Zeagle pouch and they're cheaper too.

    please recommend some weight pockets

Hi. I lost one of my dumpable DiveRite weight pouches and didn't want to pay over $100 for a new set, so I recently went with the XS scuba and Zeagle weight pouches (both under $15), which can be threaded through 2" belt. I think they may have been meant for attaching to tank straps as they are...

Just a question about dive boats

Hi. Good recommendations from several people above. I'll add 10 more: 1. Arrive early (don't forget c-card). One tends to forget stuff when in a hurry. If the dive op allows it, set up your gear (reg, BC etc) before the boat leaves the jetty. It is harder to do so when the boat is on the move...

    New to Diving

Hi, I agree with AttitudeMike. Picking the instructor is the most important factor. More pool sessions do not necessarily mean you learn more (they may just spread the material out and make the pool sessions shorter). I'd ask several divers in your area who they think is a good instructor who...

    Recreation diver:pony bottle?

Hi Simon, After nearly 170 dives, I've decided it's time to get a pony (just because my equipment hasn't gone wrong doesn't mean it won't do so forever). I'd say the size depends on how deep most of your dives are and your breathing rate (and how much your breathing increases under this...

    new reg advise

Hi Icarusflies, There are many good regs out there, so you're going to get a lot of different recommendations at different price ranges. Why not check out a few objective tests of major models done by ScubaLabs (of Rodale's Scuba Diving): http://www.scubadiving.com/diving/regulators/ Also, price...

why do we pay so much

Regarding the brass clips - I've been told those at hardware stores have springs made of zinc - which corrode and break in a matter of a few dives esp. if you clip and unclip a lot. Most diveshops that know the difference stock DiveRite clips, which I'm told have stainless steel springs, hence...

    Best Honeymoon/dive Vacation

For your budget, you can do a weeklong to 10 day trip to several exotic places I have been to: 1. Bali - Liberty shipwreck at Tulamben, muck diving at Secret Bay (or nearby Lembeh Straits), drift dive at Nusa Penida/Blue Lagoon. Topside - spa/massage at resort, shopping for native arts and...

    Problem with lateral rolling

I find that when I'm horizontal, having more weight higher up (in a XS Suba weight pouch attached to tank strap) helps reduce rolling movements when I'm finning. Doing this also helps with weight distribution as I'm bottom heavy and tend to have feet down when I'm neutrally buoyant. Dive safely.

    need advice on key largo

If you're looking for more economical lodging, I'd recommend Bayside resort, which I've stayed at 3 times in the past 6 years. It's a 3 star hotel, has 2 restaurants on site (one Japanese, one American), a small pool in the back and a little beach. There's a Burger King a stone's throw away and...

    Equipment to bring?

Hi Namchief, I doubt if you'll need an emergency strobe. Even if you have an emergency, it's better to use your primary light to signal your diveboat, rather than having a blinking strobe. SL4 LED sounds good as a primary. Maybe you can add a 4 AA-cell LED such as PrincetonTech Impact XL or UK...
