    Perforated ear drum

Doctormike, Thanks for the insights. My tympanoplasty is decidedly thinner and more delicate. I don't like to get it wet, though 40 years of aversion therapy has something to do with this.

Hard-soled boots & fins for shore diving

I like the lycra socks. Finis Lycra Skin Socks These really help prevent chaffing of water softened toes and ankle knobs. An added benefit is that the socks capture skin and toe jam which feeds the dreaded stinky boot bacteria. You can wash and dry them daily plus they ease entry into damp...

Bonaire old town site or old saltworks by Red Slave?

I was just google earthing (verb?) Bonaire and noticed there was what appears to be a street grid submerged in the evaporating pond opposite Red Slave. Is this an old townsite, fort or salt works? My impression was that the Rincon was located for defense purposes as well as to catch the cooler...

    Perforated ear drum

I am speculating whether there was a scar leaving a weak point in your eardrum from a tube. I don't know much about tube placement, Dr. Mike or DocVikingo could probably answer this question factually. I just thought the perforation looked like an old scar. That you had no sensation of...

    Oly Shade Ring

You could mask off the internal strobe along with using flat black tape over the lens information. Photographic gaffer's tape works well. Probably have to order it since almost every phot shop I can remember has gone out of business.

    Perforated ear drum

If you had over 100 dives already, without issue, you should be ok after you heal. You may want to look into Doc's Pro Plugs or a Pro-Ear mask to shield your ear. Figuring out exactly how/why you perforated your eardrum in the first place might also be helpful. When you tried to equalize...

    June Photos

I found the tarpon shots most interesting. For me, they always seem to blast into my field of view, but are then gone before I can even point the camera. You really demonstrated their evolved hunting strategy of silhouetting prey against the sea surface. SO what what's your camera set up?

    Depth of field calculators.

It seems you may be overthinking this, but that's me, not you. Basically I would do some test shots of subjects lined up on a rule. You might try PMing Phil Rudin or Jack Connick here on ScubaBoard. Some on line sites may help. Aperture, F-stops and Depth of Field|Underwater Photography...

Tested - Micro Four Thirds with Extension Tubes

Very nice work and a very complete write up on your link. I just ordered a used Olympus 35mm macro and a 4/3rds to micro 4/3rds adaptor for use with PEN E-PM1 and E-PL6 cameras. I have a bad feeling that the lens diameter is going to be too large for my housing.

    Colouring my fins

Contact the manufacturer for the exact material they use. They may be able to direct you to a product. There may be some industrial or perhaps specialized automotive paints which might work. I am thinking of some of the 2 component urethanes. You might run into an issue where the rubber...

    E-PM1 help

Try taking the battery out. Then press the on button and hold it, without the battery. Then replace the battery and try to start again. As I recall there were dire warnings about interrupting firmware updates. It may require a trip to Olympus. Good luck.

Oye, gert7to3 & others. Effect of scuba-diving on optic nerve and sheath diameters.+

This appears to be associated with intra cranial pressure (ICP) issues, something they didn't look at much in medical retina. I don't quite see a correlation to diving, since pressure differentials are supposed to affect air spaces, not saturated tissues. Also the sample size is small and...

How my ear infection was fixed

Other countries' "socialized" medical systems negotiate lower prices for prescription drugs. Our Medicare system is prevented, by law, from negotiating pricing, but our VA can. Your insurance carrier may or may not get a negotiated price. Also, big pharma companies are buying up the...

    ProEar Mask Evaluation & Report

I have something over 150 dives with this mask. Works for me and yes, it will keep your ears dry. Some SB posts: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/diving-medicine/314276-do-vented-ear-plugs-work-topic-comes-up-often.html Pro ear mask advice and independent snorkels. Ear Trauma at 15 metres...

    Zenith Dome....glass fell out!

Did you, for some reason, take your dome lens out of the port in the first place, or did it come assembled this way?

What gear malfunctions have you ever had?

Regarding FinnMom's post, First, I had a fin buckle failure in mid water once. I retrieved a couple of zip ties from my BC pocket, re-attached the strap, in mid water, then finished my dive. I bought spring straps. This turned out not to be a permanent solution. The attachment pins have...

    Red Sea Visibility

I was on the Red Sea Agressor last week out of Port Ghalib. Up to 25m vis was about the best we had. Winds were rather high later in the week, almost straight out of the north. Significant surf over the reefs resulted in quite a bit of stuff getting washed into the water column.

    E-PM1 with flash

A Cathy Church take on Victor's excellent post. I try to make as few changes as possible underwater. Use the Manual exposure setting. Use RAW capture and the fine jpeg setting. RAW will give you the most flexibility with your processing (especially B&W), but many photos come out just fine...

Do vented ear plugs work? The topic comes up often.+

Subjectively, I think Doc's Pro Plugs reduce the reaction a person has to the entry of water into their ears. I have used these in the past then went over to a Pro-Ear mask. I have the same effect with the mask. The initial response to water entering my ears does not occur. I also have had a...
