I'm wondering how long beaches in the area are going to be closed for water-based activities because my current plan is to go diving right in that area in early August before my liveaboard... Should I change my hotel reservation to something further north/closer to Hurghada?
I ended up booking at Fort Arabesque resort and diving with this operation. It's coming out to be more $ than the liveaboard itself, but I really want to dive and I deserve a treat to stay at a nice resort for a few days.

Just wanted to say think you much for this post, looking for dive center to enjoy some diving from before liveaboard... this looks like I could do 4 dives a day without too much hassle!
I am so jealous! Although I'm going to Bonaire from end of November to mid December so I really shouldn't be complaining. I need to cut back my travel adventures somewhat because my mom needs my help in New York so I split my time between home, New York, and my diving addiction.
I normally fly Garuda if possible because they're part of sky team and I'm a delta platinum medallion so I get nice perks and lounge access. I wish I could leave late September, I need to put in a bunch of hours at work in September and early October. I'm already taking off 24 days for this...
This is so helpful! I haven't extended any vouchers that I've gotten but I can definitely give them a call. I have Google Fi so all of my calls are Google voice calls.

If you look at the list of top 10 worst airlines in the world, you might see a few familiar names on there if you've looked at Indonesian airlines. Garuda is part of skyteam and as a Delta Platinum medallion I try to book skyteam airlines whenever possible.
It looks like travel to Indonesia is happening, and I've done my initial planning for my trip out there in October. (Work asked me to solidify the days off I need, which is quite a lot.)
Does anyone have good advice for figuring out who flies where, when? I usually use google flights. I'm...
That's a lot of flying around, and a lot of days spent not diving due to travel... I'd pick 1-2 places and stay there and dive there, settle in, get to know the area. With COVID and such, flights are delayed/moved/cancelled a lot.
Spent 9 days at Anilao Photo Academy in February-March this year and it was great. Dive guide had an eye for wee stuff, helped with strobes and snooting, and then we'd review photos in the evening, get tips on editing/composition, and set goals for pictures the next day. You could ask "I want to...
This one came up from the depths all on its own! We saw three of them that dive. I'd never done black water diving before, and black water photography is really challenging but the photographs generated are incredible!
