Should You Pick Up That Seashell?

When it's conch season, I collect and eat as many as allowed. I'll keep the shells, they are beautiful. Collecting shells by hobbyists is the least of the mollusks concern. They pick and choice specific animals . Doubt if that has any impact on the populations. Commercial collecting...

Us Tourist Dies In Brac Diving Accident

I was at the resort when the accident occurred. Weather was slight wind, small chop. No real stress. Calm enough we went to Little. Time they came in indicates it was the first dive. By midweek, most divers have had multiple dives under their belt. Sad event. I will comment on the...

    Palm beach shark diving

Looking to take my son on a short dive trip to Palm Beach area. I'm not acquainted with the local dive operations . Does anyone have a recommendation for a good boat dive. I remember reading about Emerald, but that's it. The trip would be in April or May. Are the Sharks still around...

Best boat and shore diving locations

Bonaire is easier. If it's windy, very little of Brac is calm. The wind wraps around both sides, with a little a bit of the Northwest protected. Brac is more like the Northeast side of Bonaire. (except for the 20 foot pile of debris) Some Brac sites have developed exit and entry. The...

Best boat and shore diving locations

I pay 10 dollars US air, 12 for Nitrox. Tanks by the dozen. They set them out am at Scuba Shack, drop them off pm. There is no crime, so they can stay out. I believe CBRR is the same price. I use my own weights. I should check the CO, but both facilities have well maintained, state...

Best boat and shore diving locations

Best way to shore dive Brac is to grab tanks from reef divers or scuba shack, and ask where the calm spot is. If it's calm, I'll go to any of the North east spots. Most have defined areas to park. My favorite is Spot Bay. Public beach on the south side is a fun dive and easy to swim...

Buying Property in Tulum - Advice Needed

No Mexico experience. I have had properties in Cayman and Panama. Both worked out well. The biggest issue becomes finding someone local you can trust to keep the property maintained. You are 1000's of miles away, and the simplest fixes can be complicated and expensive. if you have...

Best boat and shore diving locations

My favorite spot in the Caribbean is Cayman Brac. All types of shore dives, including some drift diving if you coordinate it. If you want boat diving, the two dive operations are top notch. Expensive, but worth it.

How does a diver get left behind?

When I was left out to sea, it was the Captains fault. I did get a free boat dive my next trip so it worked out well. It helps if the divers let the boat know you are a diver on the boat. . I don't usually socialize and my social anxiety worked against me. Captain said he didn't...

    Diving with Ostomy

I just got back from a dive trip with my friend who just had his colon removed. No problems. He was at first hesitant because of the lack of control when the bag fills. We missed a couple of morning dives waiting for the movement. No big deal. We just dealt with it. The...

So a good estimate for tipping the DM seems to be 20 % to answer the OP's question.

    Tipping Divemasters

I always think of the money. It's not given away for poor service. The Dive Masters I deal with deserve the tips. If I bring along a buddy that is tip cheap, it is an embarrassment, and I will cover their cheapness. Hence the need for extra money in the tip budget. I'm planning a Palm...

    Tipping Divemasters

I'm guessing DM's in the US are considered "independent contractors"and are responsible for their insurance and tax filing. Waiters/waitresses are not independent contractors.
