    inspect your own tanks

I once witnessed a diver pour nearly a litre of water out of a pony bottle after a dive. He had breathed it dry depth and then descended a few feet deeper. The water simply went up through the regulator and into the tank.

    Out of water survey

All insurance carriers require periodic condition and value surveys. The time between surveys varies with the company and the age of the boat.

    sunk on purpose....no appeal?

I put diving an artificial reef, diving an aquarium or doing a shark feeding dive all in the same category. They may be good training exercises or better than nothing if the real thing is not available. I would rather dive a real wreck, a real reef or dive with sharks acting in their normal...

    Ghost Ships

I missed it this year. I had a Deco and Advanced Nitrox course to teach in Rockford. I haven't figured out how to clone myself yet. How was the show?

    **bang**

Sunday I had a pool session planned with some technical students. I was planning to do a little fun session to break things up with some odd or vintage regulators. I had an old Healthways tilt-valve regulator that I thought might be fun to play with, so I got it out and put it on a full tank...

    Servicing your own gear

I do the service on my own regulators because I prefer to trust in my own work than in someone else. You will probably never break even on the cost of getting the training, tools, etc. that it takes to do your own. If you live in the Chicago area, however, I can teach you how to do it.

I have Asthma and I want to Scuba dive!

No one on this board nor any doctor can tell you whether or not you should dive. What a physician can do is to give you more information about your condition that you can use to help you make your own decision based on your own risk analysis. There is a small risk to your life every time...

    what to do with flashlight?

Please do not carry accessories like flashlights on your wrist. I always cringe when I see divers with flashlights, cameras etc. hanging from lanyards on their wrists while climbing back onto the boat. A sudden wave or boat movement could cause the diver to slip and fall. If the object on...

    Top 10 Freshwater Dive Locations

While I agree with your assessment of diving in the Straits, I was referring to the shipwreck named "The Straits of Mackinac" not the passage between upper Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

low, intermediate, or medium pressure ?

People often refer to the same things using different words. When referring to scuba regulators there are three different spaces with differing pressures. 1. The space between the tank valve and the high pressure valve (first stage valve) is generally referred to as "high pressure." This...

How many cave divers are here?

I was certified as a cavern diver with NSS-CDS in 1988 and Full Cave with NACD in 1998, but I don't do much cave diving. I am a dedicated wreck diver.

    PADI swim test

PADI, as well as most other agencies, requires each student in an entry level Scuba course to demonstrate swimming non-stop 200 yards without equipment or 300 yards with MF&S. This has been the case for several years.

    Kids and computers.

My son is in his early thirties now and works as a computer programmer. When he was 8 years old I bought him a clone of the Apple 2E, the state-of-the-art Apple at the time. It came loaded with a word processing program and the BASIC computer language. I refused to buy any games for him...

Do you carry a snorkel on every dive?

When I was first certified, in the early 70"s, my instructor taught me to carry my snorkel under my knife straps on my leg. Now, I seldom carry one unless I am teaching a recreational scuba course. When I carry one it is a folding snorkel tucked neatly in my thigh pocket.

When did you learn Buddy Breathing

YMCA did not have an "Open Water" course in 1972. The course Entitled "Open Water" was first introduced by PADI in 1978 or 1979. It was their entry level course which reduced the amount of training that was required in the pool and increased the number of open water scuba training dives from 2...
