    A Close Call (from jsonline)

I'm glad to hear that you were all ok. That is the kind of experience no for which no one wishes. I hope you will be able to recover most of your lost gear. I had a group from St. Louis out on my boat (a 40 ft steel trawler) Saturday morning diving SS Wisconsin off of Kenosha. That is a...

Look for Lake Michigan wreck coordinates near chicago?

It can be a little frustrating trying to collect an accurate list of wreck sites. There are plenty of lists out there, but many have errors and some are completely worthless. A lot of the old lists are based on shore references or LORAN TD's. Shore references can be very accurate but you must...

    Buoyancy/balance issue

On most open water training dives the students and staff will spend a lot of time vertically on the surface talking and getting ready to descend and then again reviewing the dive between skill sessions and the experiential portion of the dive. This is not normal diving. On a typical dive, you...

I will be there with Cory. I will also try to find a few lights for the less illuminated among us.

    Lake Michigan Wreck Moorings

We installed a new mooring on the bow of SS Wisconsin yesterday morning. Now there are three moorings that can be used.

    Chicago Captains - Location question

I think the Grumann Avenger torpedo bomber is part of that park. The numbers I have for it are N41 47.769' W 87 31.572'.

Fill station operator and PSI inspector

I can find no requirement for DOT approved training in the CFR. In fact, I can find no reference to DOT approval of any particular courses or providers of training. 49CFR172.704 simply says that training must be provided and stipulates what must be included in the training: Pipeline and...

    Lake Michigan Wreck Moorings

Over the weekend we placed a new mooring on the boilers of Lady Elgin. We put a second mooring on SS Wisconsin (at the midship, port side) and added a second chain to the aft mooring. The aft mooring chain was worn. Those of you who go out to SS Wisconsin should know that the aft mooring is...

How do you anchor your dive float, and how do you retrieve it.

The one time I truly thought I was going to die underwater was many years ago when I was a new diver and I was towing a float with thin nylon string and got myself hoplessly entangled in the stuff. I have noticed a trend lately of sport divers using reels for towing flags. It looks "cool'...

    Wreck diving Lake Michigan

I operate a boat out of Waukegan and I can rent most of the equipment you might need. The exception is exposure protection. You can, however, rent wet and dry suits from local shops.

    Lake Michigan Wreck Moorings

We have just recently installed moorings on St. Mary, Lady Elgin and Seabird. There is one mooring on the stern of SS Wisconsin. We hope to get a second and third line on Wisconsin soon. Enjoy.

    Chicago-Lake Michigan Wrecks???

We only go to Wells Burt or The Straits of Mackinac on full day trips. The Straits is 24 nautical miles from Waukegan. That is about 3 hours. We break it up by making dives at St Mary or Lady Elgin, which are at about the half way point. SS Wisconsin is 11 miles from Waukegan in the opposite...

    Reg Service Turnaround Time?

When I had my shop I tried to make the turn around time one week or less. If a customer needed his regulator in less time I would work on it myself to get it back to him in time as long as it was a brand I carried. For brands I did not carry, I had a technician that worked on most brands and had...

    Chicago-Lake Michigan Wrecks???

SS Wisconsin, St. Mary and The Straits of Mackinac are all good wrecks. You could do SS Wisconsin in the morning and St. Mary in the afternoon, but I think it would be difficult to fit SS Wisconsin and The Straits of Mackinac into the same day. They are just too far apart.

Have you ever run out of gas, or been close?

In the early days of diving with 72's and no SPG's running out of air was our signal that it was time to go up. Since we started diving with SPG's, there has never been a time that I have run out of gas unless it was the result of an equipment malfunction or a conscious decision in order to...

    Dive flag at night?

Both the Inland Rules and the COLREGS (Rule 27 b, e & 30 a, d) require small boats at night to display an all around white light when at anchor, except when in a designated anchorage, and three vertical lights (red, white, red) when supporting divers. It makes no difference whether the vessel is...

    Dive flag at night?

From boats, flags and day shapes are not displayed at night. The proper signal at night consists of three lights in vertical line - red over white over red. If you are diving from shore in an area in which there is boat traffic, it is unlikely that any boats would see a flag at night...

    Dive Flag Enforcement

My partner was doing some salvage work in Waukegan Harbor one day. He had a flag in the water where he was working. While he was down a boater came in and tied up right over him. The local sheriff gave the boater a ticket.
