Atomic Frameless or Dive Rite Frameless 145

Fit is everything, BUT the Atomic Frameless is awesome. Light-weight, low volume, super clear glass, great fitting (for me), comfortable skirt, and huge FOV. If my atomic breaks or gets lost/stolen, I will replace it with the same mask.

    Light weight split fins

The V-12's are amongst the heaviest of the splits so you could probably find a number of lighter alternatives...the Atomic Splits are pretty light

    How did he get certified....?

For a second there, I thought that was me...but then I realized that it was diver_dog. He probably got certified through PADI I'm guessing; I know they're not too keen on teaching alternative kicking techniques and this particular diver seems to only be utilizing the doggy-paddle. "Safety...

    Big Guy, Out of Gas

You're right! Clearly people should never let a pesky little thing like morbid obesity stop them from doing what they want! If someone is so overweight that a particular activity might kill them, I say: "Why waste your time losing weight and getting healthy when instead you can just have fun...

    Stiffer fins EASIER on joints?!?

Alright, so this is totally counterintuitive, but I can’t doubt my own experience. When I first got certified I bought the Mares Raptor split fins. I hated them but since they were the first pair of fins I had ever owned, I thought that I just hated fins period as opposed to hating split...

    fins

Like DevonDiver said, it depends. New fins may lessen/eliminate the problem...but the issue may be how you're kicking, not what you're kicking. I could buy $150 running shoes and I'd still get smoked by Tyson Gay wearing work boots. Maybe you can try out your buddies fins and/or rent some...

Diving tomorrow, where should I go

Not sure what conditions in Malibu have been like but I dove Laguna today and conditions were great! Light surge, 1-2ft surf 15-20ft vis; according to the swellwatch surf report conditions should be similar tomorrow. Heisler park is my favorite site in Laguna (out in the SE kelp bed), but surf...

Fins similar to Mares quattro excel?

I'd give some serious consideration to sticking with Mares; they are arguably the best fin manufacturer in the business...they are at least amongst the best. I hear you on not wanting to waste money, but again, Mares is a top fin-maker and I believe there is very little difference between the...

Mares ABS Plus fin buckles (UK?) ?

I was considering buying a spare pair at one point, and in having checked around at a few sites/places they were always sold as complete buckle/strap assemblies; that was here in the US, but I'd assume it would be the same in the UK. I ended up going with spring straps...something you may want...

Do you use your SAC for anything? POLL

I'm with you...I remember at one point I was inquiring with an LDS about a Solo Cert and the divemaster asked me what my SAC rate was; I remember thinking "are you kidding me, that's gotta be like the most meaningless thing anyone could know". Like you said, SO MANY things are going to affect...

Warped View of the Dive World

I don't understand the point of this thread at all. Warm water divers and infrequent divers are the most prevalant. Middle-of-the-road gear is the most widely available gear. If you are involved in some sort of specialty or technical diving you will have a more difficult time finding...

Near miss diving doubles for 2nd time

You questioned whether or not a 5/7mm wetsuit was adequate for 39°F DEEP water!?! Here's some thermal advice for future endeavors you might embark on: -Ice diving: Speedo's and a rash guard; NOT ADEQUATE! -Climbing Mt. Everest: Tank top, shorts, sandals; NOT ADEQUATE! -Marathon in Kenya...

What attracts divers most for diving?

Wow...I've never seen vis that good at the dive park; looked like about 70ft or so.

What attracts divers most for diving?

Pretty much everything. The weightlessness, the sensation of flying, the beauty, the uniqueness/quantity of creatures, the solitude, and the quality of the equiptment (made in USA, made in France, made in Italy...take that China!). Definitely there are things that suck about SCUBA...cost...

OW dive question... newbie with question-- please help!

Probably gonna be chilly, but wear a 7mm wetsuit, 5mm gloves, socks, 6-7mm boots, a hooded vest, and maybe even a long-sleeved rash guard and you should be able to do a couple of dives comfortably.

    lackluster diving in Laguna

Just thought I'd post this in case anyone is thinking about diving this weekend. Although the weather was great and the water was fairly warm for this time of year (surface felt close to 60F, at depth temp as 57F), the surge was moderate to strong, surf wasn't too bad early in the day (2-3 ft)...

    Earthquake During a Scuba Dive

Damn...that story is a trip. Can you imagine SCUBA diving, having fun, seeing lots of pretty fish and then emerging from the water to see a city completely destroyed, full of death and chaos? Crazy.

Fills - time for the overpriced LDSs to expire!

I think all LDS's should close down and Target should start selling 3000psi bicycle pumps with a yoke attachment! Who do these dive shop owners think they are? They may very well be overcharging me by as much as a couple of bucks per fill...NOT COOL YOU ATTEMPTING-TO-BE-PROFITABLE FU*KS!!
