    $400 for personal equipment?

As others have stated, it really depends on what gear you're getting for that price. We have basic items that would keep you around $200. Scuba is like everything else, you can spend as much as you like. When I'm helping someone pick out their gear package, the one thing I tell them not to be...

    Dive Computer Suggestions

I've got 2 AI computers. My first was a SmartCom, and the newer one is the Cobra 2. I like them both and have had no problems with either one. Many great features are mentioned here, such as downloadability(if that's a word), quick disconnect, user changeable batteries, etc. I would also...

    Thread preview time

When I move my cursor over a thread title I get a little balloon to preview the thread. Is there any way to increase the time that little window displays? Thanks, David

    Myrtle Beach Dive Club

Our local Club Aquarius chapter seems to be growing by leaps and bounds. However, it occurred to me that there may be local divers here who don't know the club exists. We typically meet twice a month. Once at a local establishment to have some appetizers, etc. The second meeting is usually a...

    required skills?

Are you trying to get the SSI AOW, take a specialty class, or start from scratch to get a SSI OW card?

AOW accepted over Master Diver ?

SSI AOW = 4 specialties and 24 dives. So you had to go thru this experience level to get to master diver whether or not you got the AOW card.

    Suunto Left Bar graph

The part I haven't figured out is how does it know what size/type tank it's hooked to. Would it read a LP steel as a 2/3 full HP steel? I've got a Cobra 2 and this little graph to me is about worthless.

    New Marine

This looked like a good place to put this. Congrats to the son. He graduated Marine Corp boot camp this morning at Parris Island. Thought I'd share the news. David

    Laser pointer

Anybody ever tried one of these. Beam of Light Technologies Shopping Cart I'm playing with the idea of one of these for a gadget, NOT a signal device or light source.

    AL80 to 132ft (caution-contains math)

Ok, I'm all for doing gas planning, but this raises an interesting point. At what point does it get redundant to the ridiculous? To throw the ultimate safety factor into the mix would be to never get in the water in the first place.

How much time did it take for your DM?

About 16 months, but that was because I did it while still working my full time job. Also in the middle of course came winter, and diving in Myrtle Beach in the winter ain't such a popular thing.

    Question on changing mouthpiece

hmmm...I've always formed mine before I put it on the reg for fear of the steam somehow damaging the diaphragm. I also put the mask on when I'm forming it, so it's formed in the same manner it which it will be used. Quite a sight running from the kitchen to the bathroom mirror with a mask on...

No LDS, Where to Get Tank Refilled?

That is hilarious. But how long does a fill take for people still on dial-up?

    Discover Scuba?

That about sums it up. The only thing extra I tell the participant is to bring a bottle of water also. 2 reasons. 1. I know they are going to have dry mouth at the end of the session. 2. While we're sitting on the pool deck talking about how much fun that was and sipping our water together...

    Cramp question

In addition to what has already been covered, I also use these and they seem to work. I don't know if it's the pill itself, the other factors, a combination of the two, or just in my head, but I rarely get cramps. I get them at the local drug store. Gray Market and Your Opinion

Do most gray market items involve essentially low ticket items. I'm not implying that scuba is cheap, but I've never heard of a gray market Ford or Chevy for example.

    Improving my air consumption

In addition to all of the above, one of the things I noticed about myself was keeping myself occupied. When I was diving and had nothing better to do than worry about how much air I was using, I used alot more. But when I kept myself occupied or focused on something else other than my gas...

Another vote for seacure. Once you get it molded right, there's no more pressure than you would normally have with your mouth closed.

Help me plan my road trip to Florida

There are lots of springs you could hop in on your way down. One of my favorites is Blue Grotto in Williston, about 20 minutes off of I-75. It's a favorite because 1.it was my first spring, and 2.if you go on the weekends there's a guy selling BBQ sandwiches that are fantastic.

Is it possible for me to dive even though I don't know how to swim?

Like others have said, a basic level of comfort in the water is necessary, but you don't have to be able to compete in an Olympic swimming event. Before I started diving I really didn't enjoy any watersports except for boating. Water was good for drinking and showering and that's about it...
