I think you may be close to the reason. They avoid activities where they can't use their cell phones. Think how many messages and tweets you could miss in a one hour dive. Of course going off the grid to a remote dive destination would be torture for them.

Sounds like you are off to a great start. Finding an instructor and dive shop you are comfortable with really enhances the experience.

We stayed at Den Laman and dove with their on site dive operation Bonaire Dive and Adventure. Other than having a third floor room, I loved it.

I was there this month and saw no algae. I mainly dove southern sites, so cannot comment on the far north sites.

My grandson has been using a Oceanic Explorer Youth BCD for three years. He just turned 13. Unfortunately it appears they quit making that model. I did a quick check and there are some available new and used. It was pricey, but if he needs a new one next year they are easy to resell.
