To log or not to log is a personal choice. At the very least, write down ( someplace with your gear) how much weight you need with what suit/ water temp./ tank/ etc... Nothing makes you look more like a novice than coming on board and when asked how much lead you need all we get is the deer in...
All good advice. Getting them cert. would be the most cost effective, if you would have done it from the beginning. Add up all money spent for DSD's and you'll be pretty close to a class price.
Change up on the strokes, take your time, it's not a race. Don't focus on the distance, go till the instructor says stop. Float if you have to, back stroke works well. DO NOT HANG ON THE SIDE OF THE POOL. If you can't meet the swimming requirements, take some lessons if you have to but don't...
Each manufacturer has a certain body type that they fit the best. Look for the manufacturer that fits you the best and then look for the suit in their line with the features you need or like. A suit that doesn't fit well is a waste of money.
Scientific license would be another name for thinly veiled attempt at legitimacy. What scientific purpose is there to killing the numbers that they do each year. What exactly is the research? What is done with the carcass?
I love a good eagle egg omelet. I could easily say I need so many...
Find an instructor you trust. One that is good with kids. Some are and most aren't. Put him in a private class. Don't be there for class and make him do all the class work on his own. Too many parents want to protect the child from failure, the kid knows if they earned it or just got over on Mom...
I've had experience first hand dealing with DAN. Four suspected DCI cases while working in the Carib. Each time they were very professional. A diver that doesn't carry some type of dive insur. would be a fool. One of the four cases didn't, 22,000 was her out of pocket cost. Some boats even...
I'm surprised how many times people come on board for a dive they have no business going on with the experience they have. Mention they should probably pay one of the DM's to accompany them and they look like you want their last dollar. The DM leading the dive is not a baby sitter. Each diver...
12 dives, 2 in the ocean, Nitrox and AOW certs.? Someone locks up a computer, dives over for the day, no resets allowed. Read Rick's post several times and take it to heart.
Jack's is probably the biggest operator in the area. They also have boats big enough to get to some of the farther out dive sites. The farther you get from the Kona area the less divers the sites see. The down side is they are the biggest shop in the area and sometimes act accordingly.
I was unimpressed with the ones in my IDC that were going this route. Go through the master diver program with an instructor that cares about turning out a competent diver. Practice, practice, practice 100-200 dive in, take the DM internship at a reputable shop. Sit in on as many classes as you...
HULU has maybe 20 or so episodes you can watch. I happened to come across one of the safety divers for the filming they did here in Florida, pretty interesting stories. You never know who you might come across in this business.
