Living in South Florida, we often dive alfresco. Never an issue. I often wonder why manufactures market padding at the back. On the surface the rig is supported by the shoulders. At depth the rig is supported by the water for the most part.
I did my open water instruction with a NAUI instructor because NAUI sounded so much cooler than "Patty".
Not really. I made the choice based on attributes of the instructor and shop. When my daughter did her open water, I insisted on a PADI instructor with whom I had dived often.

Great question. I would expect folks like Jim Lapenta, Tobin George and Dive Right In Scuba to jump in here. All of my rigs have been and are ala carte/ Frienkensteined. But I have learned recently, they are being delivered pre-rigged. (some adjustment is always required at the initial setup...
Wow. I don't know why you're on my case. Show me please where I said the OP should by a bpw.
i gave the same advise I give every new diver: rent, borrow or steal as many bc's as you can. I always say the bc should be the final purchase for a new diver because it is very personal.
But so the OP...
Ernie Jabour
My daughter's open water instructor. I attended all of her pool work, though I was not permitted on the dives. Ernie spent oodles of tIme with the struggling students. They did not advance if they did not cut it (seen it), but Ernie worked so hard with them.
I can't believe you opened this door.
I started with a simple back pack. No inflatable device of any kind. Then I used a snorkel vest as a rudimentary bc. Next came a sea quest horse collar. After that, the original Scubapro STAB jacket. Then I started diving a Sea quest back inflate. (can't...
Ron and I are not always in agreement, but here we are certainly on the same page. IMO protection from "exposure" means more than just temperature. I don't know about the Islands, but I can't recall seeing a States side dive pro diving with exposed skin, but for perhaps face, hands and maybe...
I don't know when or where you are diving, but even in the best of conditions, you'll want full body protection as others have stated. Sun and critters.
I really, really like the Scubapro .5mm steamer. You are not "hot" at the surface, nor in the water. But that half mil actually helps even in...
My thoughts. The bc should come behind the regs. Regs are none subjective. (Read the test stats). BCD's on the other hand are about the most personal piece of gear yyou'll own.
Some will tell you to buy BC first so you can "learn" and compensate for it's anomalies.
I say try as many as you are...
There is a reason auto insurance rates are so much higher for younger male drivers.
It's interesting that the older we get, the more precious life becomes. You would think it should be the other way around.
But that too is for a different thread.
Thal. You would seriously continue a dive without the ability to measure the volume of your gas?
What might happen if your buddy had some type of failure that required she share your gas? Would you have enough?
A lot of people adhere to the rule of thirds. Without an spg how would one know...
