    peak performance buoyance

so about to take AOW - when we bought books we were told peak performance buoyance would be one of the dives we would do for the course - hubby and I were under the impression that particular dive (or course) was usually done in a pool - no problems with visibility - you can just work on your...

    Advanced Open Water

I can see that AWO gives you more time with an instructor - and if he/she is good you will get some new knowledge out f the course probably no matter how long you've been diving...and yes, as with any class about anything you will get out what you put in...having said that the tiny little...

    Advanced Open Water

I find it very interesting that so many people here waited months or years to get their AOW - my husband and I got our OW cert in September 2013 - we elected at that time to wait and take AOW after we had some more time underwater - we are signed up for AOW next month with a friend who just got...

Has anyone NOT passed their OW?

no idea how many "fail" - for me personally the class was challenging - grew up not knowing how to swim, took swim classes as an adult but was never very comfortable in the water - until I got a snorkel mask - found with my mask on I actually enjoyed being underwater - so I started thinking...

    diving with kids...

thanks for the responses - will pass them on to our friend - of course he would not push his daughter to learn to dive if she didn't want to - she's 6 and already talking about it - and of course we know that may change between now and when she's old enough to take the course. Most likely a lot...

    diving with kids...

So, have a friend who is interested in learning to dive - wants his daughter to learn as well but she has a few years before she is old enough for certification....his question is this: is it better for him to get certified before she is old enough and have some dives under his belt - or is it...

anyone used Blue Angel Resort in Cozumel?

we're new to diving - haven't been in the saltwater yet - figure a shore dive would be best for us to get our feet wet

anyone used Blue Angel Resort in Cozumel?

we're taking a cruise in a couple weeks and have a stop over in Cozumel - have contacted some dive shops there - many are connected with a resort and you can't rent tanks from them if you are not staying at their resort - have heard back from Blue Angel resort and they are willing to rent us...

    Dive Condition Reports

Anyone been to Mammoth Lake recently? We've not been there yet, but thinking of going this weekend- hoping the vis is decent since we've been rain-free for a couple weeks now.

    confession: I hate giant stride

ouch! some in that video look a bit painful. Like I said - I did it for scuba class, and I know I need to practice (finding time to get to somewhere to do that is always a challenge - as "life happens") but that falling bit just really bothers me - it's not the gear or lack of gear, and it's...

    confession: I hate giant stride

wow - elevator - never thought a boat might have one of those! I will probably "get over it" one day - but don't have that much opportunity to practice. and yes, I hate even jumping into a pool from the side - so jumping in without gear is not any better than jumping in with gear. No I do not...

    confession: I hate giant stride

Ok - this is my confession - I hate the sensation of falling so the giant stride is not my friend. I understand the water will "catch" me, I understand my BCD has air in it that will stop me from sinking like a rock before I am ready to go under - but that feeling of falling between the dock...

    PADI advanced

I suppose I should have mentioned that the dive center has said people who sign up for the night dive they are planning can either come and dive for fun, or pay an additional amount and do the night dive "course" and get that certification. So, my question is - if we do that and get night dive...

    PADI advanced

ok - I know the first thing everyone is going to say is ask your local dive center - we loved the center where we took our OW classes but have recently been given a bit of a "cold shoulder" from them - we've asked this question but still waiting on an answer so... We have our OW certification -...

    2/3 dives per day

So, found a Nitrox course on line that is $90 per person complete: Online Nitrox Certification - Scuba certification is from SDA - is this reputable and will dive shops recognize this and let you rent Nitrox tanks with their certification card? Years ago I worked at a photo lab and at the time...

    2/3 dives per day

Just checked the PADI site for their online courses - the Enriched air course is $220 each - haven't checked any other dive shops, may have to call around...so maybe a bit cheaper if we just do the course at the dive shop and don't do the PADI on-line part - even if we do the PADI course?
  17. B

    2/3 dives per day

ok, so we thought the $240 or whatever was the PADI cost no matter where you took the class - we were told to do the reading and I guess a test on line and then go into the dive shop for that portion of the class - our understanding was that the class price was the class price and you paid PADI...

    2/3 dives per day

when we checked into it I believe the Nitrox course was almost $250 per person - and there are two of us so we have to double that amount, again, not against doing it just thought that was kinda high for a class where you don't even dive...but if it helps in the long run it would be worth it...

    2/3 dives per day

no, I don't want to avoid doing dives with the instructor - just as it was explained to us the Nitrox class didn't include any dives and just thought it was kinda expensive for a class with no dives. Have been told by our instructor and by some divers we've met at different lakes that Nitrox is...

    2/3 dives per day

So, I was going to post a question: to Nitrox or not to Nitrox - seems like the vote here is yes. Just read an article discussing the fact that many divers claim to be less tired after diving with Nitrox - they have found no scientific data to support this claim, but say if it seems to work for...
