    Current currents

We were there last April and had the same issues: ripping currents one moment, total calm another, dives with the current going South (WTF?), dives where the current inverted mid dive. I remember we called at least one dive where our group was pulled in 2 by the currents and quickly...

    Iberostar

My family stays at either Iberostar or in town at places like Casa Mexicana. I personally find all of Mexico smells "damp" indoors. I don't think the Ibersostar is any different from anywhere else. And so do all the island locations I have visited. At this point that is the smell of...

Question on Form - How many logged dives since certified?

I personally stopped logging dives after 100. I do record all my dives digitally with my computer and it has a record of my diver number. I think you are overthinking this. I'd put 500 and if they ask for proof then have the discussion. You must know that no dive op really considers that...

Dock fees have jumped the shark at the Cozumel Palace

To answer some questions, it seems easier said than done to get on the boat from the beach BUT... If there is wave or wind action it will stir up the bottom then you cannot see where you are stepping. This happens more often than you think in 2-3 feet of water right at the waters edge. The...

    Marina Entry Fee

Remember when everyone said it was an outlier when one hotel started charging a fee? You are not seeing the big picture. The hotels are implementing a dollar. Now the marina is implementing a dollar. If the people in hotels can pay a dollar, why not those going to the marina? Look to see...

    Marina Entry Fee

Docks charging $1 then one suddenly $25. Mariana charging $1. What do you think that is 2 years from now?

Dock fees have jumped the shark at the Cozumel Palace

There is an old joke I like. Man walks up to a woman and says "will you sleep with me for $1 million dollars?" "Sure" she says. Then the man says back "Will you sleep with me for $10 dollars?" She replies "No, what kind of woman do you think I am?" The man replies "We have already...

May in Cozumel - wind conditions

Site like Paso de Cedral and Santa Rosa wall are literally right off Iberostar's dock. Shorter ride, bigger boat, you won't feel the waves or if you do for long.

Question What to bring vs rent?

I'll never understand the desire to video a dives so they can watch it when they are home. Be in the moment and enjoy your dive. Then go to youtube and watch someone else's dive at the identical site with the same fish, corals and swim throughs. ;) Each to their own of course.

Question What to bring vs rent?

I bring everything but that's me. I'm not spending my time and money on a vacation to hate my dives because my mask leaks, baggy wetsuit, crappy BCD, etc. I'd recommend you bring your mask and fins to start. Then wetsuit. Then regs. Then BCD. In that order. Leave the gopro home and...

Trip Report Why I Won't Be Returning to Cozumel-Part 1,2&3

I know a lot of people spend a week in Coz and the last dive day over doing the Cenotes to give their gear a through desalting.

Help with planning a Coz dive trip

This is exactly the kind of nonsense I am referring too. Name the AI but don't just say "AIs" and slander every place on the island and scare people away.

Help with planning a Coz dive trip

This is an each to their own piece of advice as their are pros and cons to each. The resorts themselves are far better at the AIs than in town. The food is better in the town. You will spend less time on boats/taxis going to and from dive sites staying down South and getting picked up at...

    Port Closed!

This is fascinating about the turtles. I usually see 1-2 loggerheads per trip. Hawksbills are the vast majority of the turtles I see. I've seen 1 green ever in Cozumel. Side note: my daughter did her checkout dives and saw loggerheads on dive 1 and 3. She was doing skills near the bottom...

    Cozumel what to expect now

Reefs were fine in Nov 19. Covid hit in Mar 2020. Reefs looked terrible in May 2021. You cannot blame resorts for nutrient overload at Palancar/Columbia and cruise ships for nutrient overload when they were not running. Its coming from somewhere else.

    Cozumel what to expect now

This is a popular but misguided myth. The reefs were terrible in May 2021 yet cleared up quite a bit by last week. Since Cozumel was closed and there were no one at the resorts and the ships were not going, I think we have to stop blaming every problem on them. There is a nutrient source...

    Cozumel what to expect now

The DMs told me they were born in the Palancars during the closure. Now that divers are showing up they have scattered looking for a new home. So people are seeing them all over because they are wandering. Everyone I talked to who saw them last week saw them in the blue off the walls/reef at...

    Cozumel what to expect now

I was in Cozumel last week and in May. Everything seems almost normal now except there are less cruises so its less crowded downtown. The locals are all wearing masks and it is very safe. The diving was VERY much improved from May. In May there was nuisance algae everywhere and nasty...

    Best Margaritas

As a scientist in real life, I greatly appreciate your willingness to deep dive into this issue. One cannot just taste a single margarita and declare that it is the best. What if it was the result of a bad pour? Or an incredible batch of limes? One needs to need to commit to multiple drinks...
