My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

FYI. Said it before. I don't own a single set of Apeks. I do have a single AL Legend ( an Apeks design) that I use in singles diving. When I moved to doubles I couldn't see dropping $600 for one set of Legends when I could get the entire Hurricane regs for $700. That said. If the price on...

My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

No worries. BTW - the primary reason my regs are Dive Rite is because they offered service kits to the public before it was fashionable. Hog is on that bandwagon and I applaud them for it.

My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

Show me how many deep dives and cold water dives Hog has compared to Apeks. 30 years Apeks has been doing it and doing it well. Ill get off this wagon. I stand by my recommendation that Apeks is a better reg set than Hog, and given the pricing available it was a better choice. But the thing...

My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

Check your facts. I never said 'you get what you pay for'. I didn't bad mouth Hog. When Jim asked why my opinion was what it was I answered. Too bad we all are able to make our judgements. really get under your skin I see. I offered another choice. I even told the OP congrats on his choice...

My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

I don't own any Hog. I take my notion from the experiences of divers on the boards. Reading about quality issues so blatant as a HP port not being tapped sold me on not using them. That's serious lack of quality control. I work in pharma and that lack of control would get a 483 and lines shut...

My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

Considering I got them for $350 a set with a pressure gauge and all assorted hoses for a long hose setup I think I did ok ;) Again, if there were xtx100s available at $369 and I had to pay for hoses/SPG I'd be diving Apeks. They came from John at NESS.

    Getting back in shape

I started my journey April of last year. I started at 277 lbs and a liability to my dive buddies. I'm now down 45 lbs and running 45-60 miles a month and cycling 80-100 miles a month. 2x a week in the weight room. I feel fantastic and enjoy the workouts. Welcome back. You're gonna rock this ;)

My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

Fair enough. Welcome to the addiction. My buddy's say I've lost more gear than they own. I have to know for myself. That said that price on Apeks will be short. If/when you decide you need more performance and/or quality you'll be paying the $600 per set Apeks demands. I seriously considered...

My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

Lol. Hardly....we're giving clearance options for proven regs. Hogs may be decent regs, but they aren't the quality of Apeks/Scubapro.

My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

I think he means by the time he adds a matched 2nd stage to the setup. Long term he's still better off. He's one 1st stage away from a powerhouse doubles set up. Even better buy two sets and shelf a first stage for doubles later. No offense to Hog, but Apeks at that price is foolish to go...

My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

While $300 may sound like a lot, do a search on Hog QA issues, IP creep etc. Apeks are tested work horse regs you'll never outgrow. A wing/backplate is fine to go cheaper. From evidence on the boards, I'd still go with a long term tested workhorse :) FYI - I'm not an Apeks fanboy. I actually...

My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

Between the HOG and the Apeks regs listed here by me and others, I'd take Apeks hands down. The prices makes them in the same range price wise. I've purchased from John at NESS multiple times and have never had a bad experience.

In terms of computers for a new diver I would recommend the Seiko 3 gas Computer. It's sold under several names (Dive Rite, Cressi, Zeagle, etc). Here is an example of the unit: http://www.diverightinscuba.com/catalog/divecomputersdivecomputers-diverite-nitektrio-p-3683.html Before moving to...

My Gear list thus far - tell me where I can save some money

A one pc harness is a one piece harness. $125 is outlandish for it. It's basically 3-4 stainless steel d-rings with retainer clips, a stainless buckle, some bike innertube, a crotch strap, and possibly a cut off steak knife in a webbing sheath. Add a length of 2" stiff webbing and you are done...

    DSS vs Halcyon

Agreed. In my experience I'd say more like 1 in 5 or so are diving Halcyon. It's good gear, but superior to others I'd say is a stretch.

    Cialis - recent DAN article

Note that this is a current study that has netted no scientific result to date. My general thought is someone who's been diagnosed with ED has several other factors that could be considered a contraindication for diving. Diabetes, high blood pressure, depression, cardiovascular illness are to...

    shearwater vs liquivision

It's an expensive piece of technology that isn't required to conduct the dive. History has shown the technology to be unreliable as well. I've seen them shut down during dives. Some people find them helpful and that's fine, I'm just going to put my dive funds into things that actually progress...

Technical diving and the new diver

Brandon, The issue is there is no 'path'. Being one who has talked with you about your plan, I can say you want to move very fast. Most of the advice that has been given is more along the lines of 'scuba is a journey, not a destination.' In reference to gear, we've only pointed out that new...
