Dive operator rec for Amed, Bali

Ok, thanks. I'd probably look to stay on mushroom beach if we visit Lembongan but check out dream beach too. Cheers, Rob

Dive operator rec for Amed, Bali

Hi Dan. August 2020, in the school holidays, unfortunately. I've heard Bali gets very busy that time of year. The good thing is that there's a higher chance to see Mola Mola at that time I hear. Last time we visited in May and it was pretty quiet , although Gili Air was quite busy.

Dive operator rec for Amed, Bali

Matt, how about Nusa Lembongan for a trip with non-divers (adults & kids)? Bali's on our radar again for next year and I'm currently thinking either Padang Bai, Amed, or Lembongan, or a combination of two of those. I have also considered Gili Air, but as we did a Gili Air, Tulamben & Canadidasa...

Using a flashlight as colour enhancer?

I have one of these: Sea Dragon Mini 900 Torch Very compact, only needs one rechargeable 18650 battery (or 2x CR123 batteries), and has various settings; full, half & quarter power, flashing, sos. I just clip it off on my shoulder D ring and tuck it into a rubber band on the webbing so it’s not...

Is have an AI feature on dive watch better?

I have definitely been checking my air a lot more often than I used to, even though I can read my spg without unclipping it as it's clipped to my left shoulder, facing me. As I usually take a camera on dives its also so easy to glance at my wrist while holding the camera. One of the nice things...

Recommendation for Feb/Mar trip short(ish) flight from Scotland

Egypt isn't dry. I've been to Dahab and Marsa Alam and there was no problems getting booze. In fact in our hotel in Marsa Alam I had to ask the barman to go easy on the gin in my g&t as he was being overly generous! Ok, the beer in Egypt wasn't the best but its was cold & wet and contained...

Is have an AI feature on dive watch better?

I think this is a fair appraisal and I can't add much that Zef hasn't already said. I recently bought a AL i450t and transmitter after seeing a good deal. I love seeing all the essential data with a glance at my wrist, particularly as my near sight has deteriorated with age. I was starting to...

Recommendation for Feb/Mar trip short(ish) flight from Scotland

Sorry, didn't see this post before sending my previous reply. I would've thought you'd be absolutely fine on a min 20 dive itinerary as I'm sure they build in a safety factor and will only do relatively easy dives on that itinerary, but as I haven't done a red sea liveaboard, hopefully others...

Recommendation for Feb/Mar trip short(ish) flight from Scotland

I have done a liveaboard in the red sea but I think I've heard or read somewhere that you're expected to have at least 50 dives under your belt for many of the dive sites visited by the liveaboards. If that's the case then there's plenty of decent shore based diving along the red sea. Not sure...

    Cressi Travelight storage

My wife’s just bought one too, it arrived yesterday. It’s designed to be folded and placed in the bag it comes in, so I don’t see any issues with storing it like that. However, you must ensure it’s properly dry inside and out before storing it in that way to prevent mould build up etc. After...

    1mm or 3mm for Thailand/Indonesia/Philippines in winter?

Btw, some people we got to know in North Sulawesi last August were diving in skin suits similar to your Waterproof suit and were getting cold in waters of 27-28C. In the tropics I usually dive in thermal shorts, a Lavacore vest and a long sleeve rash vest and I’ve generally been ok (27C and...

    1mm or 3mm for Thailand/Indonesia/Philippines in winter?

There is not a straightforward answer to your question. As you say, it does very much depend on your thermal tolerance, but it will also depend on how often you will be diving, and where exactly you plan to dive. Thailand, Philippines & Indonesia covers a vast area!! You may get away with a 1mm...

Starting to buy your own dive equipment

Fair enough. Then Simply Scuba is a fairly straightforward drive from Gatwick - should be around 1-1.5 hours drive, depending on traffic. I guess it's a case of checking which shop has the gear in stock that you're interested in then! Good luck with your mission :)

Starting to buy your own dive equipment

Mike's dive store is in London (Chiswick) whereas Simply Scuba is a fair distance from London in Faversham, Kent. So on that basis alone I'd recommended Mike's over SS. I haven't visited Simply Scuba but have been to Mike's a couple of times. They have a very good range of stock and the staff...

Starting to buy your own dive equipment

No, but I am a member of the group. I've sold my stuff on eBay, but if there's anything I can't sell on eBay in future I may try the Facebook page. I'm now very satisfied with my current gear, but I'm sure there will always be new toys to buy

Starting to buy your own dive equipment

@avfcmichael good result last night (in the end!!) :thumb2: I terms of buying gear, as I've been buying and selling some gear recently, I thought I should add that if you think this is going to be a long term hobby/obsession, if you can, it's worth paying a little more to buy the gear you...

    Cave diving in Yucatan Peninsula

Just watched episode 3 of Undiscovered Worlds with Steve Backshall on BBC iPlayer. This episode was about exploring the flooded caves / cenotes in Yucatan Peninsula. Very interesting and worth a watch if you have access to it.
