    First time in salt water

Sorry guys, no shore diving in NC. Well, not anything interesting. The real fun is the offshore wrecks. That's where the 80-100' vis is. Yeah, wetman, there are always atleast three sand tigers around hyde/markham. Those two are my favorite dives. If you're going to wilmington, I also...

    Return from Posting Hiatus

Well Guys, I just got back from six wonderful weeks sailing and diving in the wonderful British Virgin Islands. I planned to stay for three weeks in paradise, just to get my DM, but the program asked me to stay on another session as staff. It was a wonderful experience for me. I got the...

    NITROX Training

Whatever you do, don't take one of those computer nitrox courses. I think sdi offers it. No tables, just teach you how to use your computer. brandon

    Safety Stop question...

If memory serves, from Haldane all the way up to today, studies have shown that linear decompression profiles have produced more bends and silent bubbles than equivalent (in the algorithm) discreet stops. I believe there was a big controversy over it in the early twentieth. Seems someone else...

    Shore diving the ocean

No one can really say whether or not you should dive in a situation. I have heard about people drift diving in 13 knot currents and diving into class 4 rapids. The fact is it depends on lots of things. Is there much chop? How is the slope of the beach? Current? Do you feel comfortable in...

    Nitrox and Suunto Vyper computer

I haven't really dove with those computers, so I only know what I have been told/seen in demonstrations. They aparantly (sp) do a much better job depicting nitrogen loading and unloading rather than just consumed bottom time. brandon

    Nitrox and Suunto Vyper computer

The Vyper nitrogen graph is crap. It just gives you bars for how much time you have left, rather than actual loading. Bars are coming and going all the time. It is the one feature I could change in a computer that I otherwise love. Just leave it in nitrox mode. brandon

    Atlantic Lionfish

If memory serves, doesn't PADI have an aquarium collection specialty or something like that. Why kill 'em. Put them in your mesh bag and sell them at inflated prices to a local aquarium shop. You benefit and the environment benefits. brandon

    pony bottle evaluation

O-ring, the fact that my buddy isn't always right at my side and I really don't want to do an emergency ascent from 110'. tchil01, jersey dive boats really won't let you on the boat unless you have an independent air source? brandon

    Coolest thing you've ever found??

Artifacts around here, particularly in southern NC where there are as many wrecks and not as many divers as up north, are plentiful. We usually find cool stuff just lying around on the sand. Portholes, intact china, various stuff. I am upset if I don't find something neat after every dive...

    Atlantic Lionfish

The rumors have infiltrated all the way up to North Carolina. I thought that lionfish only lived in the south pacific and Indian ocean (like sea snakes), but I have been told of sightings all the way up to NC. But what I've got to ask is has anyone ever seen one in the atlantic? and how did...

    Steel 140's

My LDS will fill their OMS 131's 4000psi. That's almost 200cuft. That should be plenty of gas for whatever you need. It's also suicidally close to the hydro rating and needs an HP burst disk. If not, lots of places fill LP's to 3500. On a 131, that gives you about 175 cuft. brandon

    Coolest thing you've ever found??

Well, I expected you to talk about artifacts. I found a couple of spearguns and deco bottles. The owners were pretty upset when they realized I took their deco gas. ;) On my last dive, my buddy and I found an ammo box. We collected civil war era bullets, most of which still had brass...

    obtaining gas

just a question, guys Do you just go to your local gas supplier and say I need UHP He in order to mix a breathing gas for diving? Do they just sell it to you? Do you need a gas blender cert? What about O2? brandon

    Sub-Mariners

I am sure there are large risks if there is a problem. For example, in that russian sub that went down. The would be explosive compression as water floods the hull and then EXTREMELY deep decompression upon rescue. brandon

    100% O2 for DECO Stops

Guys, everyone is talking about using heliox for decompression. It is in my understanding that since helium is a "faster" gas it should not be used for decompression, rather for a bottom mix. Wouldn't it be much more beneficial to use, say, argon or neon in you deco mix? These slower gases...

    Charging for Serivces

Down in Florida, my uncle used to charge "$100 an hour, min 2 hours" to go down and hook up cars that fell in lakes. He got a license and only got business because the police divers ere "$150 an hour, min 3 hours" and insurance companies are really cheap. brandon

    Suggested Masks

I love my cressi-sub Horizons. It is quite possibly the best mask available if it fits your face. But going with everyone else, a mask that doesn't fit is the most irritating thing on a dive. brandon

    pony bottle evaluation

I was doing some NC wreck dives (god, I love 'em) and realized that I needed a pony bottle. I went to the LDS and ordered one. The point is eventually, I would like to use it as a deco bottle. So, I got a 30 ft3 aluminum (DIN) and an OMS deco regulator (the green one) with a button pressure...

    A dive buddy on prozac?

I am on a SSRI (zoloft, like prozac) for mild depression and social anxiety. I have been cleared by a psychiatrist and family practice physician to become a divemaster. I believe that immediately after a traumatic event or begining drug therapy one should not dive, but I have been stable for a...
