My OW certification checkout dives didn't go so well unfortunately.

If the diving is with a DM and not going too deep (>40'), then you can dive with the group - even before the 4th dive and OW certification. Either way, have fun :)

    New (to me) weather resource

    I like Windy.com, but it's just a preference thing :)

Your Instructor should've certified you as a SCUBA Diver, meaning you did the pool, written, and first 2 OW dives. That way you can dive with a professional (instructor or DM). When you finish the 3rd and 4th dives, you should be upgraded to OW Diver.

Diving the Comal River in New Braunfels on December 29th and/or 30th

An instructor friend of mine is having to do his class on Saturday/Sunday December 29th/30th at Prince Solms Park. He hasn't been diving in the Comal before, so after his class on one of or both days we plan on drifting downstream for fun dives. Anyone is welcome to join us. If anyone's...

    Port Captain

I believe Mexican federal forces frequently wear sunglasses, bandanas, etc. to protect their identities from cartel repercussions. I would. Edit: I was in the US Navy for 6 years and never saw a fishing rod. Of course, I was on a submarine :)

You can always dive later, so I think you did the right thing.

Wanting to dive in Fiji after OW, but want an instructor with me

I recommend a Dive Master (DM). DMs are professionals who assist instructors and take divers, including new ones, on tours.

    Tipping on dive boats

My wife and I have hundreds of dives on Oahu and Big Island (not Kauai) as customers, and our standard is $10/tank. It can go up or down from there (mostly up). It's your chance to reward good service, especially if you want to come back and dive with them again.

Dive Master Training, Swim Test went back in class

I had to practice for several months before I took the test, just to have a chance of passing. I've kept up with the swimming, and it's been great for my health and diving. Edit: I agree that as the sheepdog, I gotta be able to get to students fast, including grabbing them before they rocket...

Fifth Best Restaurant on the Planet in Cancun?

Are you in Cozumel or Arkansas? If in Coz, how's the El Norte?

    fear of losing mask

My primary instructor just yells at the person, "Diver, are you in distress?!"

History: Good or bad if Texas annexed CZM in 1838?

I doubt that ruins any diving :D

    fear of losing mask

As with a lost buddy, you can safely skip the safety stop when ascending due to gear issues. That's always assuming you've stayed within the rules during your dive.
