    What does it take?

My M.S. in Biology is 11 years old now. I didn't do as much with it as I would have liked, because I never knew how or where to present myself in the job market. But in the course of acquiring the M.S., I learned a lot about coastal ecosystems, and did my share of hands-on ichthyology, sorting...

Dr Hubby is brushing off weird urchin sting symptoms

Remember the tongue-twister: The doctor doctors the doctor the way the doctor who doctors wants to doctor, not the way the doctor who is doctored wants to be doctored.

    Have you seen sea snot?

Sea snot has been newsworthy lately because of its proliferation around Turkey and across the Mediterranean in general; but according to Wikipedia, the first known sighting was in 1729! From what I have been reading, it seems to be yet another result of eutrophication, akin to the toxic algal...

    Things you've found under water

Type of sand dollar called a sea-biscuit. They are in a lot of ways intermediate between sea urchins and the regular flat sand dollars.

Basic gear from mid-twentieth-century Italy: Other manufacturers

Lobster colored? Would that be live lobster or cooked lobster? I can't help noticing that the majority of the scenes with models have them holding spearguns. Am I to understand that spearfishing was more prominent than recreational snorkeling/diving, even as late as mid-twentieth century?

What is the fundamental reason that prevents scuba diving from becoming popular?

This brings up another point: not everyone had regular access to the ocean while young and impressionable. I was fortunate to grow up on the coast, where the beach was near enough to go regularly. So the ocean became familiar to me early on and I did not face it with the fear of the unknown...

Are there people who just CANNOT dive?

I still can't ride a bike, and I'm just a few years shy of 50. I am typing this one-fingered (except for the space bar and shift, which are the other hand). I was never good at any sport either. But those certain physical things that really matter to me, I have persevered until I became able to...

What is the fundamental reason that prevents scuba diving from becoming popular?

For context, just look at all the GoPro freediving videos on YouTube. Seems like pretty soon, everyone will be doing that.

What is the fundamental reason that prevents scuba diving from becoming popular?

Well, I did grow up with computers, and video games. I was an ace at Atari (and still recognize some SB users' avatars as Atari characters). Then Nintendo came along, and my fingers got too confused by that many buttons (maybe because I still one-finger type?), and I decided that I preferred...

Shorty vs. Springsuit -- is there a difference?

Where would I look for a temperature guide for scuba suit thickness?

    Greenprene wet suit by Henderson

Hmm... I wouldn't have thought to be leery; I am just attracted to recycled materials in principle. I am glad this thread was posted, so that I know about a greener alternative for wetsuits.

Shorty vs. Springsuit -- is there a difference?

So, the wetsuit thickness guide here: How to Choose a Wetsuit & Temperature & Thickness Chart | evo recommends a top or shorty for water 65°- 75°, and a springsuit of full suit for 62°- 68°. But when I tried to find out what the difference is, it looked like the terms shorty and springsuit are...

    Sea Turtle ID

Well, according to https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Species-identification-guide-to-sea-turtles-found-in-US-territorial-waters-Prefrontal_fig2_268745071, more than two prefrontal scales rules out Green. The shell is not like Hawksbill. So that leaves a choice between Loggerhead and Ridley.

What is the fundamental reason that prevents scuba diving from becoming popular?

I'll admit it. All the stories about what can go wrong -- especially getting bent -- are scary. I'm a strong swimmer, and comfortable in the water -- on the surface. But yes, fear is a factor in my hesitancy to go below. When I watch a freediving video on YouTube, and I see the diver swim...

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

Remember when Florida got tired of Covid and just decided it was over? How are they doing now compared to, say California, which just reopened today?

    Lionfish in the Red Sea

Well, just from Wikipedia, I see that morays are predators of both species. I would be curious whether there really are invasive P. volitans in the Red Sea, or if an abundance of P. miles is being mistakenly identified as such. The same Wikipedia articles also said that lionfish are taking over...

    Fitness and diving

I see you all have been giving the OP good advice. I'm in a bit of a different situation in that I have recently experienced unwanted weight loss due to spending the majority of my workday walking and pushing moderate loads. I was skinny to begin with, at 5'8" and usually <140 lb. Now I am...

What is the fundamental reason that prevents scuba diving from becoming popular?

Perhaps perceived cost, then. Most non-divers see all the fancy equipment, have no idea what it is, or even what you actually need, but it sure does look expensive. Whereas the mountain bike and its associated safety equipment are at least comprehensible to someone outside the hobby.

How would you get to Palau or what would you do in Guam for a day?

But a tropical version of America. That makes me want to go there -- as much as I enjoy tropical ecosystems, the "third world" infrastructure in most of them makes for quite a logistical challenge.
