    Buddy skipped safety stop

My take was you have already learnt the lesson , to discuss your dive plan before the dive. A safety stop has nothing to do with a computer, it is a choice you make in planning the dive. I was concerned that there was a need for condemnation of your buddy on this forum. Apologies, guess what...

    Holy Grail of Diving?

I have to add my vote for the Maldives, warm, viz 50+ meters, Pelagics, never ending pristine coral fields, walls to 1000+meters, but have never dived pacific Islands, will go to Celebes Sea next month, and see how it compares.

Three strikes and you're out... I've now written off PADI

If the open water diver course was more thorough/onerous, very few people would take up the pastime. I think PADI does an amazing job of introducuing people to diving. Sure they don't have immaculate boyancy control, impeccable skills, but for average safe guided vacation dives, it is OK. Open...

DIN 300 fitting the same as M26x2?

101recon, unfortunately that link is pretty old and predates the new EU standard, here is a link to an explanation of the new M26DIN outlet, and its impact. NITROX CONNECTIONS Which way will the M26 take us? - Divernet

DIN 300 fitting the same as M26x2?

That is correct, M26/2 is the cylinder neck thread. However the diameter of the DIN fitting is also larger, so a standard DIN reg will not fit. This is the madness of the EU, you will require a dedicated nitrox reg.

    Maldives?

The typical dive is drop down outside edge to about 30 meters, hang on and watch the pelagics cruise past, then let go and drift progressively shallower up the wall and into a channel, finish dive inside. The coral is endless and pristine, the vis amazing, best diving I have ever done. There are...

Dive Trip: Yongala & Navy Pier

That's a lot of flying between dives. Yongala- Townsville, Navy Pier-Exmouth. Just if you do take the trouble to come to WA, Navy Pier is $165.00 for a 50 minute guided shore entry dive, which takes the best part of a morning with at least 5 typed pages of waivers and releases, and an hour's...

Air is not an ideal gas?

Thanks for that, it is exactly what I was looking for. Seems at average room temperature, the compressibility of air drops by about 10% from 200 to 300 bar.

    nitrox

Forgive me, but in my limited experience I have yet to see anyone diving with a full face mask!

    nitrox

Tanks do not have to be Oxygen clean for nitrox < 40%, if a membrane system is used to fill the tanks. You only need O2 cleaning if partial pressure blending is used. If you do have your cylinders O2 cleaned then every airfill whether nitrox or not has to be to the nitrox standard, if you want...

My Venture into GUE - Another view

My question, is did you intend doing dives that required the skills taught in the course, or were you doing it to join the "elite"? I suspect that being a more skilled diver can be achieved in many ways,(horses for courses). I have followed these DIR bashing threads and read all about the...

Registering non AS 1777 tanks here's how

If you buy a new tank in Oz, they will either have a BS 5014 (steel) or a DOT xxx (Aluminium) stamp. (No AS whatever stamp anywhere). Apparently an importer has an authority from someone probably worksafe to test and stamp them. Once they have been tested once in Oz then they are good to go and...

29 Dec 10 Fiji Diving Incident (Amy O'Maley Fatality), Part I

Sorry to pick a bone on this but just because there was a succsessful lawsuit doesn't make it right! In a first world country it is not unreasonable to have a defib in places where people exercise. The cause of death is usually primary arrhythmia due to ischaemia. This is exactly the situation...

29 Dec 10 Fiji Diving Incident (Amy O'Maley Fatality), Part I

Divingtheseamount, thank you for your detailed account. This is a tragedy and I feel deeply for all concerned. The traumatic stress on the rescuers in a CPR situation is not widely appreciated. What is necessary is a debrief shortly after the event, which goes a long way to minimising the...
