    Out of air incident.

The wording that someone quoted a few pages back said nothing about OW certified divers being limited to 60 ft. It said "beginning" divers should not exceed 60'. My point is that "Beginning" is not the same as "OW certified".

    Out of air incident.

No, you have it backwards. It's the pressure downstream of the 1st stage regulator that CLOSES the valve. If the tank doesn't have at least 150 psi in it, a spring fully opens the valve, and your LP hose and 2nd stage receive whatever pressure is left in the tank. The 2nd stage works...

    Out of air incident.

Your description is correct as far as it goes, but it doesn't go far enough. Your 1st stage will continue to open until the IP reaches its 150psi set point. If it can't reach 150, it keeps trying, by simply going full open and staying there. Your 2nd stage works similarly. If it can't keep...

Feb 19 2017 Cozumel diving fatality

Wow! The operation I dove with in Cozumel (two years apart, and ended up with the same op and same DMs) was very different. They would not do Devil's Throat until at least the 3rd day of diving, so they could evaluate the divers and see who they felt would be safe to take down there. If...

    Honolulu dive ops?

I'm going to be in Honolulu in the next few weeks for work, but expect to have at least one day off, and would like to get a dive trip in. Any recommendations for good 1-day 2- or 3-tank boat trips? I'm AOW, Nitrox and Rescue diver (PADI) certified, and have 54 dives. I'm mainly a...

"Riding your Computer Up" vs. "Lite Deco"

What about the case of breathing diaphragmatically diving vertically, and horizontally with shallow breathing?

    Getting my own tanks

Yup, worked perfectly for me when I went from an AL80 to an HP117. Just had to play with my trim, moving the weights around. The *total* weight was perfect the first time.

    Snorkel tube in scuba diving

Yeah, me too. I find it hard to swim straight without a reference to look at.

Negative Entries - A Bad Idea???

I've only done one negative entry (on the wreck in Coz last fall, with lots of current that day), but there was no extra weight added, just squeeze almost all the air out of the BC, and don't resurface after entering the water. With no air in the BC, I sink fairly fast with a full tank. By the...

What would you do differently ...

Yup. Ex-Navy officer here, and yes, they frown on that kind of off-duty socializing. I'm sure it happens, but it is kept pretty quiet. Like many others have said, I wish I had started diving earlier, but realistically, it wasn't going to happen for many reasons, mainly financial, but others...

    Diving 38s - the Trifecta

I've hit the Cozumel Quadfecta: 86F water, 86F Air, 86' deep, 86' (or more) viz

Canadian woman presumed dead - Roatan, Honduras

Yeah, good point. Depending on the boat, the wind can have a bigger effect than the current.

Canadian woman presumed dead - Roatan, Honduras

If the boat is drifting, yes. If the boat has their props running so they maintain the same location over the bottom, with a current running at the surface, they will be pulled by the current, just as if the boat was moored in a current.

Canadian woman presumed dead - Roatan, Honduras

When I've been in Coz, they put the boats in neutral, so the props aren't normally spinning while we're entering the water. If they were facing into the current holding position with the props, the diver would be pulled away from the boat pretty fast any way.

What is the classroom training like these days ?

My class was about 2.5 yrs ago, and I'd estimate it was about 50% videos, and 50% the instructor talking/explaining/etc.

    Getting my own tanks

I have two Al 80s, and two HP117s. I'm a bit of an air hog, so usually use the 117s local unless I'm with a group that I know will have a short dive. I like them, but they're a bit heavier than the 80s. But for your use, they're also shorter (and fatter), which gives me a bit more leeway for...

How Much Gear Do You Bring When You Travel?

I've found that I'm more limited by weight than by volume. A large checked bag held everything I needed in Cozumel, though I kept my computer in my carry on.
