Which Nikon Flash? SB-400 or SB-600 (above water)

I bought the 400 when I went to Egypt. We did a tour of a temple at night. The 400 was not powerful enough. I'd get the 600. I was next to another person with a Nikon D200, I have a Nikon D80, and she said "Nice to know" when she saw the effect.

    Checked luggage or Carry on?

I'm not a videographer but I pack my camera and laptop in a backpack and the housing in my carryon. It makes both a litle heavy. I'm going to upgrade the carryon to a dedicated photo type (Lowepro I think) for more protection for my gear. I worked too hard to get the DSLR & Housing I wanted...

    Opinion on steel 72's

Just be careful of the weight as doubles. My ex was worked manual labor and was 6'2" very fit. He still grunted when he stood up with steel 72s. But it helped in his air hog ways, we came up with the same air, me with the aluminum 80.

    Colour Coordination

When I was a NOOB, I was all pink. That's 'cause my ex was an all blue. Now all I have left is the pink tank and pink mask. All the other stuff wore out (third BC) or I found stuff that worked better. But now other divers tell me they know it's me by the pink tank. They have no idea. :)

    First Dive in a Drysuit

I've done that after 100 dives in a dry suit. It happens to us all.

Tropical but inexpensive diving vaca... is there such a thing??

If you want the Bahamas (excellent that time of the year) you can go real budget with Blackbeard. Bahamas scuba diving liveaboard Blackbeard's Cruises That's $899 pp. I don't know about Nitrox. They didn't have it when I was there in May 07. You do need to fly to Freeport Bahamas to board...

Anyone else going on a Blackbeards cruise for New Years?

I've been out on Blackbeard's twice and loved both trips. But I loved the trip at Thanksgiving much better. That was Thanksgiving of 2002 and the vis was fantastic. I went back in May of 2007 and the vis was not what I expected. It seemed that all the coral had a haze over it (spawning?). I...

    First time with back-inflate. Wow

As a photographer the back inflate has an additional benefit. When it gets inflated it doesn't get in the way. I love it too. :)

    Non-diving spouses

I'm lucky - I have a BF that really supports me in my diving. He's proud that I'm going to Egypt in THREE DAYS. And I'm happy he enjoys hunting with a "I'll be back when I get it (the deer, the elk, the antelope, the turkey). I also drive all by myself to S. Calif to go out on the...

    Unresponsive diver! Call for pizza!

I had a nice two student class. We didn't need any invitation to get too hungry on our dives. :)

    Anybody in Monterey today?

I drove down Friday to go out on the Monterey Express on Saturday. Like a goof I gave them my home number and not my cell. Good thing another person in the group called and told me. That way I got to sleep in. I did consider beach diving at the Breakwater but heard about the vis and canned...

Best customer service for online Ikelite sales

I recently purchased (last month) an Ikelite housing for my Nikon D80 from Reef Photo/Video. They had better customer service than B&H (returned emails ASAP) and beat the B&H cost by 10%. The good thing with Reef Photo/Video is the customer service after the sale. They answer all of my...

    Channel Islands - boat recommendation

I vote for the Peace. On one day trips you get 4 dives but sometimes if the site is great they might stay in one place - you can always go the other way on the second dive. You can also sleep on the boat the night before you leave which is recommended 'cause they leave real early in the...

    What is your dream dive?

Truk lagoon is on top, next the great barriar reef. I've done the Galapagos, fantastic, the Cayman's, Pt. Hardy, Bahamas, and in three weeks, THE RED SEA. Yep, I'm excited. Also, please excuse the bragging. I'm working on getting all those little red pins on the map. :)

    Drysuit concern???

I put the neck on first, then put on the arms. It takes a little of a contortionist to do this but it can be done. Put the arm at the top of the zipper in first, then the other. Hope this helps.

    What was your greatest dive?

My best was in 06 at Darwin's Arch, Galapagos. We did a "hot drop" from the pangas because a whale shark was seen in the area. We dropped just about on top of it. Then it vanished. I was in the "blue" no bottom, no reef, just blue and saw my roommate. I swam over to her and asked to buddy...

    Rebel XSi worth it?

I recently purchased a DSLR (Nikon) and have been an underwater (film) very amatuer diver before. I bought a digital point & shoot for my first digital. I couldn't get processing on the boats anymore. That was a mistake. The shutter lag KILLS so many shots. Yes, you can press the shutter...

    How do I get a new C-card?

I haven't been certified nearly as long as you, 1989 for me. It delaminated and is now gone. I've requested a new one from my LDS (PADI) My X was certified in 1972. He was the worst diver on the boat. Even kicked the regulator out of my mouth when he turned abrubtly. Wonder why he's the X?

Which do you prefer? night diving or daytime dives and why?

About 20 years ago I did a night dive in the ocean. Really, it was more of a bounce dive. Unfortunately, I was afraid of the dark when I was a LOT younger and night dives are like in the dark. One of these days I'll try it again. There is sooooooo much more to see at night.
