Marking your own gear, how do you do it?

I mark all my gear "John B" but that might be confusing if we were ever to dive together, so just in case, you might want to use your own name instead. ;)

Is an SPG necessary with a wireless computer?

Great zombie thread! As something of a backpacker myself I really enjoy using my Garmin Dakota, but there is no way in hell I'd ever head into the backcountry without good old-fashioned waterproof maps and a compass as a backup. Then again, back when I tried an AI computer my SPG was...

    Ohio Student Fatality

With a balanced rig, even if a diver lost their ditchable ballast it's only the difference between a full and empty tank.

No air at 40' at night

You don't think DCI is far more likely than DCS for a newer diver on a 40' dive? Esp. after going OOA?

    Scubastore??

Read the fine print. By using Visa's online verification system, you are basically giving up your rights to file a protest for bogus charges.

    Which BC should I get

I think most dive gear these days is of fairly high quality. That said, if the only scuba gear for sale today was made by OMS, I'd give up diving. I'm basing that solely on the couple of experiences I've had with their equipment, but if the rest of their gear is as bad as what they sold me...

    Which BC should I get

Huh? I have hundreds of warm water Caribbean dives in a 5 lb steel plate, which almost perfectly offsets the buoyancy of a near-empty AL80. Then it's just a matter of adding a small weight belt or weights in harness pockets to offset whatever exposure suit I'm wearing. I can't imagine using a...

New Mac OS X Dive App

Sorry for the threadjack, but it's never necessary to use "Run Apps from anywhere". The default Gatekeeper setting for Mountain Lion is "Mac App Store and identified developers". But if you come across an application that you are sure you want to allow to run, Control-click or right-mouse-click...

    Which BC should I get

Everyone will tell you to buy what they use, so let me be the first to tell you to check into a BP/W (backplate and wing) instead of the usual BCDs. Mine is from DSS: https://www.deepseasupply.com (look under "Complete Rigs"). Tobin, who is the brains behind DSS, is cool_hardware52 here on...

Oxycheq Mach 5 is the most unsafe???

As a very new diver, I had a BC with a pull-style dump valve on the inflator hose fail the first time I gave it a serious tug. Only later did it occur to me that, since I already had the inflator hose in my hand to use the pull dump, I could've just dumped air using the dump valve on the end of...

No air at 40' at night

Not directed at the OP, but just a hypothetical question: What if a newish diver that forgot how to find their octo also forgot to breathe out on their rocket ride to the surface and got an embolism in the bargain?

I need a good dive operator for the Vandenburg by tomorrow morning!!

For the dive ops doing double dips on the Vandenburg, how long are the SIs?

Oxycheq Mach 5 is the most unsafe???

You have to have a balanced rig, for that very reason. You need to be able to swim it up when you are most overweighted, with a full tank at depth. If the difference between a full and empty tank is 6 lbs, then IMO you need at least 6 lbs of ditchable weight. BTW, it's also possible to be too...

    SP pricing

Jeez, beiberdivers, another one of these threads where you take any criticism of Scubapro as if it were a personal attack? Over and over and over... :shakehead: You advertise yourself as "Your On-line Scubapro Platinum Dealer". That just means you've agreed not to stock products from brands...

If you could only have one tank, what would it be?

The PST steel HP 100 tanks were all that, and then some. Wonderful balance to them. Too bad their parent company imploded financially... I had a pair of Faber LP-85s that were pretty awesome as well.

What are good/not as good SCUBA equipment brands?

Maybe look into how other businesses and vendors comport themselves on SB?

LOL! You'd be surprised how often people who've never seen a HOG rig in action will come away with that impression.
