    Diving and the weather

Let me preface this by saying I have vastly less experience than lots of others on this board - but in my limited time diving, weather down here seems to be more of an issue in spring (march/april). Over the summer I've not had much of an issue of dives getting called due to poor conditions...

HELP! What are the Keys like?!?

Yeah, the last week or so has not been good for diving down here, viz has been poor and the ocean has been churning. Assuming it stays marginal, the storm comes through on the 13th, and giving it a few days to settle down puts you at the 17th before things would start to get nice again. It's...

    Cheap shore diving vacation?

If you're not set on the Caribbean, you may want to consider the Fort Lauderdale area - there's some decent shore diving in Lauderdale by the Sea, Pompano Beach, Hollywood, and other cities, and the Blue Heron Bridge is about an hour and a half north... A lot of of the dives are close to shore...

Do you need to pee while diving? Urination and diving explained.

I agree with fisheater - it seems like a better summary of what DAN is saying in that reference article is that the vasoconstriction is a function of immersion in water that isn't necessarily a result of the water pressure. To be fair, it looks like the author was trying hard to put the...

Looking for Octo holder that fits Aqualung ABS

I use the silicone snorkel keeper trick, and I guess there's a chance that it could slip off the D-ring when you pull the octo out... but when you pull the octo I would think it would actually tend to tighten the loop around the D-ring. I guess I'll have to try it several times in a row next...

How long should I keep using scuba gear?

For what it's worth, I bought nearly all of my gear used (5-10 years old), had it serviced, and it's been serving me well so far.

New to deerfield beach area... Need some dive buddies

Hi! I'm down in South Broward, and get out diving about once a month or so, usually with the Gold Coast Scuba meetup group: http://www.meetup.com/goldcoastscuba/ They're a good bunch of people and have a variety of beach and boat dives throughout the week. I didn't know any other divers after...

    Boots, boots, everything boots

I really like my Aqualung EchoZip boots. I have wide feet and they fit better than any others I've tried. Edit: I do most of my dives off of sandy beaches or boats in warm water. I wouldn't use these for rough, rocky shores.

Risk of moisture damage from valve replacement?

I'm planning on replacing a valve on a steel tank (Faber HP 120). I'm concerned about the possibility of moisture from the ambient air entering the tank and potentially causing rust issues - should I be? When dive shops or VIP facilities swap out valves, do they use a procedure where they purge...

    Weighting for very shallow dives

Thanks. If I remember correctly, I had vented it fully before I hit the safety stop.

    Weighting for very shallow dives

Do any of you out there vary the amount of weight you carry based on the depth of your dive? Since getting certified, I've done most of my dives off the beach in Lauderdale by the Sea at depths of around 12-15 feet. On these dives, I use 19 lbs of lead, no air in my BC, and have to manage my...

    Best Dive Log Software?

I like Diveboard : Your online scuba logbook. Track, share and explore scuba diving through community dive logs - I find it well-designed and easy to use, and it also has an iPhone app so I can log dives back at my car before I leave the dive site. You can manually enter profiles, and I believe...

    Things That Almost Bit You

On my first open water dive, I ended up in a cloud of hand-sized white fish just off the boat that started nipping at my hair :shocked2:

What you do when you aren't diving

I work as an environmental engineer (mostly water/wastewater). Outside of that, I'm typically playing with my kids, wandering around in the woods, helping organize a youth group, or attempting to fix things around the house.

    Tap water rinsing & chlorine

Exactly! Seems like you could pick it up awfully quick though :)

    Tap water rinsing & chlorine

WillyCham - you're essentially correct, since the levels maintained in pools and in municipal water supplies are similar. Pools tend to be run with around 2 mg/L chlorine residual, while you'd typically see from 0.2 mg/l to 4 mg/L in your tap water. What you actually get at your tap depends on...

    Test your buoyancy understanding!

Yeah, it would be more correct to say you have 200 lb-mass of mass under water. The problem with "imperial" units is that "pounds" are used interchangeably for mass and force at the surface of the earth. That is, a 200 lb-mass person standing at sea level is pulled toward the center of the earth...
