I want to be fit & trim - but HATE exercising!

At age 56 I lost 35 pounds - eat less and exercise. I hate exercising, but I had gone to Kona that year and my air consumption was terrible. I had two (barely) 20 minute dives. I was honest with myself that I was not happy with being tired all the time, either. I harnessed my "inner OCD" and...

    Handling LDS fee?

I'll be shopping for a new dive computer in a few weeks. Likely a Shearwater. I've always tried to support the 3 LDS in the area one way or another. One was close to the office and a tech-oriented shop. I bought a BC there and I get regulator servicing, VIPs, hydros and fills. Another shop is...

Card you’re most proud of earning?

Rescue - that one was a lot of work. It just felt more "real" than the others. But the math, physiology, processes in all the other classes was pretty easy for me, so Rescue was the first one out of my comfort zone.

How to answer "what is your highest certification level"?

Same for SSI - I wanted Rescue as I was diving with newbie family divers and wanted the skills. I did Deep, Nav, and coupla others and I got a Master card in the mail completely unexpected. But when asked? AOW and Nitrox.

    Diving watches

I love dive watches, especially Seikos. "Tool watches" for the most part. Every single one has been on a dive or two. All of my uncles were military in the 50s-70s (huge family), and they all wore Seikos, so to me a Seiko dive watch reminds me of them. My rule is never own a watch that costs...

Time for a new laptop, looking for suggestions

Re: Windows on Mac - as pointed out above you can dual-boot Windows with BootCamp - OR You can just run Windows in a "window" - use VMware Fusion, which is free for non-commercial use. I use it for "odd" things: Thoughts on how many years we should expect our dive computers to function properly.

Time for a new laptop, looking for suggestions

I have a MacBook Pro - 13" and 15" and they are fine for the limited amount of video editing. Honestly at this point, I'd even look at the new Macbook Air - that ARM processor is running rings around the Intel stuff (in some benchmarks) at a better price. And once the faster ARM ships in the...

Gloves with wetsuit? Or if cold enough for gloves, it is cold enough for drysuit?

San Diego - 7mm suit, 3mm gloves when "warmer" and 5mm when colder.

Best Dive Log App - Recommendations

In general, until recently, almost all the proprietary dive log apps from the hardware vendors seemed like poor afterthoughts - bad SW, minimal features, designed or outsourced from a hardware vendor. If you a have a Mac, I recommend MacDive. The support, when needed (once!) was great. If you...

Thoughts on how many years we should expect our dive computers to function properly.

Probably the serial adapter - they are all over the map on HW and device driver quality. I dont get that error, but I've only downloaded 1 dive - as a test to verify that I could :-)

Looks like we are using almost exactly the same weird solution!

    Tank size comparison

What's the squatty little blue thing going to be when it grows up? Does it have hopes and dreams to be a basketball or volleyball player, because, if so, I've got some bad news for it.

Thoughts on how many years we should expect our dive computers to function properly.

OK, here's the lashup I use for a "vintage" (hah!, it's from around 2003 or earlier, look at the downloaded dives in the screenshot- so vintage!) - Citizen Hyper Aqualand. Physically, it's a 25 pin serial to 9-pin, then a serial to USB adapter. Software, it's MacOS, Vmware Fusion (there are...

    Perdix AI AA Battery

I'm considering a Perdix AI - the only reason I haven't is that I don't know WHEN I'll be able to dive again... Is there any reason to NOT just pull the battery after every trip? I mean, I'll go diving for a day, then not again for weeks. Or do 3 days of local boat diving, then nothing for a...

    Bungee straps for Perdix

I don't understand "the single finger or bolt snap doff"?? Is this some mystical technique that is handed down through the secret society of Shearwater owners? :-P

Just pulled up a bunch of plastic edging

Doesn't matter which mode as much as a rather coarse blade. Also don't run the blade at high speed or the plastic will melt, gum up the blade and actually meld back together behind blade!

Just pulled up a bunch of plastic edging

I used to have that stuff (looks like Black Diamond) and I've chopped it a few ways over the years as I've yanked it out. 1. box cutter/razor knife - can be done, not fun 2. sawsall - works but hard to control as the tpi causes lots of bouncing 3. hacksaw - worked almost the best 4. jigsaw -...
