I just reread your opening post and noticed that you only had rescue scenarios on the first day. Our scenarios were for the duration of the course plus shore exits so I don't think you actually got more than average for this. Anyway I hope you ultimately see value in it.
blandmc, how did others in your class find the instruction, did they have the same reaction as you? Like I said there is supposed to be an element of stress including some task-loading and catching students off-guard. In my class there was a lot of discussion after scenarios as well, sharing...
I did PADI Rescue and it was thorough and there were parts that were a bit taxing, some students got a verbal bollicking to be sure. The stress element and task loading is an important part of the course in my opinion. It's relative though, some students thought it hard and stressful while...
Done 40+ dives down there over the years but I'm pretty sure this was in Santa Lucia- Camaguey. It's not a problem if you do your checks right and nobody messes with your gear, but yeh with newbies on a busy boat who think counterclockwise always means open I could see this being a hazard.
I did Dos Ojos last month which was a lot of fun. The barbie line opens up more while the bat cave route is a bit more dark and restrictive- feels more like a cave dive from what I understand. Amazing viz and some really nice speleothems throughout.
Congrats :) It took me years to reach 50. I just started logging dives a couple of years ago though as I was contemplating the NAUI MD or DM and would need some sort of verification. I found that logging is useful for weighting, especially if your alternating salt/fresh, cold/warm etc. I also...
On your average resort dive in Cuba a few years back I received a tank that opened in the clockwise position. I didn't think much of it at the time but when I was on the boat the DM/guide started going around turning peoples valves on. I had already turned mine on and doubled checked that it was...
Yeh, again from what I can tell there seems to be contention among medical professionals in this area over the benefits of laymen attempting in-water breathing-especially when there is little empirical evidence to it's effectiveness alone. In scuba this means fiddling with clips, looking for...
I think there is some contention as to how much rescue breaths actually help, since even on land the more recent cpr procedure seems to concentrate primarily on chest compressions. It was traditionally thought in this situation in the water that getting any oxygen into the lungs is better than...
Congrats! I don't carry mine, I recall my rescue instructor saying the actual possibility of contracting anything by doing mouth to mouth is extremely low. I basically agree that hauling arse and getting the victim to land/boat for cpr should be the focus if it's not too far away.
I'm no Pro, just a guy who loves diving. I would add however that you contact the dive centre at your vacation destination beforehand, let them know your concerns etc- that way you can set-up it all up. If it's a resort you typically will get a pool session and then a shore dive so you can get a...
Congrats, it sounds like you have a great attitude towards the sport. Just to touch on the PADI DM route, I recently talked to someone who found this course a bit of a letdown. I think a lot of padi divers go that route thinking it's the next best level to improve skills, even if they don't...
Not yet, although I intend to next month when I head to the Caribbean. As mentioned I'll get it checked out first as it has apparently not been used in 7 years and probably stored in the previous owners basement. He was an instructor and tech diver so I imagine if there were issues he would let...
My impression was that the recall I was referring to was due to the over-pressure /dump valve sticking in the open position and deflation being the issue. Anyway, I'll take it it in to my local Sherwood dealer and have them check it out.
-cheers
Thanks widget,
I'm not sure if you are referring to the same problem. This is the notice that I came across: Scuba Buoyancy Compensator Devices (BCDs) Recalled by Sheico PKS Inc.
My BC was purchased around that time, which was 2000 to 2001. That said, the inflator button is blue however. Were...
I purchased a used Silhouette BC for some infrequent warm water vacation diving. It's relatively old (2000/2001) but wasn't used much- about 25 dives or so, mostly for instruction at Tobermorey (Lake Huron) in Ontario. Seeing this is a go-to bcd by many rental agencies and given it was was used...
