Review of Blue Angel Resort and Dive Shop

Thanks for posting the pics! I'll be there in February, and I'm really looking forward to 2 weeks of boat-diving and unlimited shore-diving. Nice to hear that there is more life on the little area of reef, rocks and rubble just south of the hotel.

    ID Help, Please

I think you are right. I just looked up the species in Paul Humann's "Reef Fish Identification" book and it states that the snout is usually dark purple (all of them in the photo have purple snouts), and the older ones can have some yellow to reddish areas on the lower rear body. Also, the...

    ID Help, Please

This photo was taken mid-morning in Nov. 2008 about a half-mile off the west coast of Jamaica near Negril, depth was about 50 feet.

    Diving Jocassee

Last Sunday, my dive computer showed 70 - 72 at the surface and 64 - 65 at 81 feet.

    Diving Jocassee

I'll be diving Sunday (from the diver's ramp) unless the weather turns bad. Lake level is up about 5 feet. It is nice walking into the water on the ramp, instead of on rocks. Depth at the end of the ramp was about 5 feet last Sunday.

    Padi Rescue Certified...SDI OW?

I think the main difference in PADI and SDI Open Water certs is that SDI doesn't teach the dive tables; they teach reliance on dive computers instead. Also, SDI offers a Solo Diver course, and (just a guess) THAT ain't gonna happen at PADI for a while........

    Sharks in Costa Rica

I was in Playa Del Coco (Pacific coast), Costa Rica in July. I made 10 dives in the Gulf of Papagayo and saw 3 sharks; 2 Nurse sharks and 1 White Tip.

    Corn Islands

I haven't been, but previously did a lot of research before deciding not to go. It appears to be easy enough to get from Miami to Managua, however, the "rub" seems to be getting from Managua to Big Corn Island. Recently, there were 2 puddle-jumper airlines, but one is no longer flying...

    Jocassee report anyone

I made 6 dives from the diver's ramp on September 14. The ramp is open. I dive there at least once per week this time of year, and it has not been closed. However, the water is so low that motorized boats no longer use the adjacent boat ramp (they use the main boat ramp instead). The depth...

    Panama

How far is the regional airport at Allbrook from the international airport at Panama City, and what is the best way to travel between the two? Do Aeroperlas and Air Panama have websites with fares and schedules posted?

Playa del Coco, Costa Rica Trip Report - July 2008

I arrived in Liberia, Costa Rica on July 14, 2008 from Miami via American Airlines. Normally, the 20 mile taxi ride from Liberia to Playa del Coco costs $40, however, I was fortunate to meet a business owner on the plane who lives in Playa del Coco. He offered me a ride for $20, and I accepted...

    Joccassee and Offthewall charters

If you don't want to carry all your gear down the ramp when doing shore dives, you can drive down the boat ramp (which is adjacent to the diver's ramp) and offload your gear near the water. When the diving is done, you can drive down the boat ramp again to pick up your gear. It is okay if...

    Diving in Costa Rica

I had a wonderful time, and really enjoyed diving with your great crew. Saw several sharks (including my first White Tip), and rays (including the largest one I've ever seen), morays and turtles on just about every dive. I'll be posting a full trip report in this forum shortly.

What gear to bring to Costa Rica?

I'm presently in Playa del Coco, CR. Today was day #1 of 5 or 6 days of diving. I was very comfortable using my full length 4/3. Several folks were diving in shortys, and no one complained about being cold. According to my computer, water temp ranged from 81 - 83 degrees. Viz was 40 - 50 feet. I...

    Diving in Costa Rica

I'll be there in two weeks. I'd really like to hear about the diving you did; what sites you visited, conditions, water temps, what you saw, etc. Glad you had a good time!

    Nassau and Freeport

Hmm.....saw this thread and was going to suggest Grand Bahama Scuba in Freeport, and seeing if you could get lucky enough to do Theo's Wreck and Shark Junction on the same day. Since Tavi beat me to it, I'll just second his suggestion. By the way, the day I did Theo's Wreck and Shark Junction...

    Jocassee lake level

I dive at the diver's ramp every week-end now, and I think a good "rule of thumb" is: If the water level is 74 or below, the end of the ramp is probably out of the water. That could be off a foot either way, but I think its close.

    Lake Jocassee?

When I was there on Sunday the 25th, the last couple of feet of the ramp was under water, but if/when the lake level drops even a little, the ramp will be high and dry.
