    balance with a pony

That's basically what I do, except my 30c.f. sling is on my right, and I use a two pound clip-on on my left side. Works fine, no foul ups. My friend puts his on the main tank, but I have not seen any difficulties. Whatever makes you happy.

I've decided to get a Pony Bottle; which one...?

I like ponies and use one often. My 1st choice is my 30c.f. bottle which I take on a sling. I have no problem keeping my balance. The sling is on my right, and by using a clipon weight on my left, balances me out nicely. As for Spare Air, it is the right size to froth the milk when making...

HP vs. LP / High Pressure versus Low Pressure steel tanks

Pity you're in the States. A Poseidon 8L HP tank is nice and small, but with an amount of air comparable to an Aluminium 80. No D.O.T. stamp on Poseidons, though, that I know of. My 1.9 BAR worth.

HP vs. LP / High Pressure versus Low Pressure steel tanks

My two main favourites are 1. my two 230 BAR steel Aqua Lung tanks, and 2. two 8L Poseidon HP tanks. The first one because I don't like too much of my weight on my hips. I like to call them my "Medium Pressure tanks." Here, when people talk about HP, they mean 4500. There's where the 8L...

redundant gas supply for rec diving

For sure. Actually, I think about the only use for a Spare Air is to froth the milk when making cappuccino. ;)

redundant gas supply for rec diving

Of course you have to have and maintain an extra tank, reg...etc. Diving is not the cheapest sport around. However, the potential benefit is worth more than without. I'm not sure what the raging debate about ponies is all about. I'm not worried about admitting that I take a pony with me...

Can you mount a 30 cf PB on your back next to an 80cf?

Well, my friend/instructor sometimes takes a 30c.f. pony mounted next to his steel80, and has no problems that I've been able to observe. Lots of fishing line around, but never gets entangled. He uses a set of straps that keep the pony hooked to his main tank. I take mine on a sling, as do a...

    DIN is Superior

That's what I do. My reg's DIN, but I always have my trusty dusty adapter handy. After almost more than 200 dives almost exclusively with DIN, I am sold on it, as well as steel HP tanks (my Poseidon HP tanks naturally have DIN fittings). I also have two LP steel Aqua Lungs (U.K. manufacture)...

    HP tanks in Sri Lanka?????

Hi, I'm teaching here in Saudi Arabia, but my wife and I have a house in Sri Lanka. I am thinking about buying some Poseidon HP tanks, but am curious about whether or not I would be able to get them filled to their rated 300 BAR rating there. Anybody have any experience there? I know the...

    OK here's a challenge!

Gee, I'm so lazy. I make a packet of fat free jello, and eat all, as there is no fat, carbs, and no real calories to speak of. It satisfies my sweet tooth. I'm not an Atkins worshipper, nor WW, but get scared when I see layer upon layer of delicious chocolate. This is making me hungry. :)...

    Accident Avoided!

Your comment about an SMB not only being for boat dives is a good one, and I will start taking mine whilst shore diving as well. Just because I'm diving from the shore doesn't mean I might not need to signal anyone at the surface.

Some divers need bigger tanks; Some need thicker suits...?

Sometimes more exposure protection can be as simple as a hood, and not a thicker wetsuit. Here in Jeddah, the temp's about 29C now. A hood without a bib works just fine to keep in a goodly amount of body heat. Gloves too. It's just like winter back in Vermont. You lose so much body heat...

    Pleasantly Humbled

Obviously it's possible to do Rescue with 16 dives. Of course some people are just natural in the water. Confidence, after all, is of utmost importance. It's hard to tell what this diver's water background is, but I must agree that the best way to learn is by diving, diving, diving. I did...

    Under Pressure!

My deepest dive (on air) was to 203 feet, with my DM instructor/friend. Only about 2 minutes was at depth, and the rest of the dive was an ascent to 10m or so to finish the dive and start to off gas at the same time. For deep diving, I regularly take a sling bottle. Depending on the depth, I...

    Drunk Diving at 6m (18ft)....

I like a good drink as much as the next person, but my underwater beverage consumption is limited to foil packeted juice drinks. There's a juice drink here that comes with a straw. The straw keeps a nice seal when inserted. Just let a minute amount escape through the straw to prevent drinking...

    DM Mapping Project

Along with contour lines, in my DM mapping project I included a detailed sketch of the surrounding beach area as well. ie: entry/exit, facilities on shore, bearing to shore, other nearby surface features. This allows a new diver (or experienced diver new to this particular site) to have a...

Acceptable Gear Bag Size for Boat

Here in Jeddah, the boats I go on are 48 footers, and have decent space for storing your gear. However, some people bring their gear in giant bags, which are great for the beach, but not a boat. The other problem is that even if everyone brought compact gear bags, there can be so many divers...
