    "Mount Everest" of scuba diving

No biggie. Now Lhotse (4th highest) is at the other end of the SE Ridge from Everest, and it's also a harder climb. And Makalu (5th highest) is a few miles away from Everest. But adventure tourists aren't interested in either, because there's not the same cachet as 'highest'. Guy

Add Binoculars to Your Scuba Kit

I keep mine, Nikon 8 x 24s bought 30 years ago for backpacking, in close proximity to my cell phone. So far they've helped me not call emergency services on at least one instance at BW. Haven't had an occasion yet where the decision went the other way, but it's only a matter of time. Guy

    Best buddy check mnemonic device?

While I dive solo a lot and use the head to toe method (actually toe to head), the one that works best for me is "Because we really aren't fish" First saw it here in another thread, and it makes sure I'm in the right frame of mind to do a thorough check. Guy

    Want to borrow/rent Can light

I'll be taking Fundies with Rob Lee in June, and would like to take the class in full tech rig to try for a tech pass (yeah, right). Having been able to buy or borrow everything else I need, I'm still short of a can light, which I can't afford at the moment. Does anyone have a can light...

    "Mount Everest" of scuba diving

And before Kropp there was (of course) Reinhold Messner: Reinhold Messner - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It should be mentioned that Messner's solo climb in 1980 (his 'support' consisted of his girlfriend, who he left at base camp) was also a first ascent of a new route. Guy

    "Mount Everest" of scuba diving

There have been several cleanup expeditions, at least on the south side (since you mention Base and Advanced Base, I take it you were on the north side, i.e. coming down the Rongbuk?) and I believe there's another one (all Sherpa) this year. I agree that K2 is unlikely to ever see hundreds of...

    "Mount Everest" of scuba diving

In the US, or at least North America, I'd suggest that the Edmund Fitzgerald (560 ffw) might qualify. It's pretty much got to be a rebreather dive, the water's cold, it's historic (or at least fairly well known, owing purely to the song), etc. Penetrations obviously not as convoluted as the...

    One Cam Band or Two

Exactly my experience. With a single band, you have to pre-wet it to make sure it's really tight, or you're likely to have the tank slip out (happened to me twice). Since I started diving my BP/wing with two straps, I've never bothered wetting the straps, and never had any problems (other than...

    "Mount Everest" of scuba diving

Are you suggesting that topic drift isn't a factor on SB?:) But enough of this, let's define what the requirements are for a wreck to become the _new_ Mt. Everest of diving. Does the wreck have to be deep? Big? Hard to get to? Historic (a disaster)? Difficult conditions? Other? Guy

    DUI CF200X question???

Allison What?! Next you'll be telling me that slogans on bumper stickers often vastly oversimplify complex issues! Say it ain't so!;) What she said, Mike. Guy

    "Mount Everest" of scuba diving

There are still challenging routes on Everest, as long as you're not on one of the tourist routes (SE or NE ridges). And you can still die quite easily on either of them. But because of the crowds, top climbers have been avoiding Everest to some extent, and there really aren't a lot of new...

    DUI CF200X question???

Well, according to the slide (copyright 2007) in the Fundy Student guide that I just got, it has: Tri-Laminate Construction Telescoping, Self-donning design (no shoulder zippers) Pockets on each leg (side of leg); loop in pocket for accessories Turbo soles Shoulder dump P-valve Good...

    Lobos report May 4

Thanks, Kenn. I don't have GPS info yet, but hope to take the Navimate out there whenever I get to borrow it from Francesca. I eyeball-guesstimated 005 to Sea Mount from the map waypoint of LM, and we wound up arriving along the right side of it, assuming that we were in fact at Sea Mount. IIRR...

    Lobos report May 4

Can any of the BAUE people confirm that the location of Lone Metridium shown on the map was determined by GPS and not by estimate? When I was out there, the depths (61' at LM, 72' at the base of the wall it sits on) put it north of the map location. And the distance from it to Sea Mount (or...

    BP/W BCD-I am puzzled

I guess that's true for the Eclipse wings but not for the older Pioneers, as I've been using my Pioneer 36 (bought used) for 2+ years with just the cambands. I hadn't noticed that the Eclipse didn't have camband slots. It may be that my tank wobbles a bit and I'm unaware of it, but it's never...

    DUI CF200X question???

Mike, the CF200 is fine; the crushed neoprene doesn't cause any buoyancy issues, and it's warmer than a tri-lam suit. It's also quite heavy, especially when wet, takes a few days to dry, and is fairly bulky. In short, it's not a good travel suit, and the TLS350 is. That being said, my 13...

    Dive Report--Pt. Lobos, May 3

Isn't that the way MASTER DIVERS(tm) are supposed to do it?:whistling: Yessiree, really makes me want to rush right down to my LDS and give them $40 so I can upgrade my AOW and Rescue cards to one that says I'm a MASTER DIVER(tm). It will be worth it for the respect I'll be given for having one...

    BP/W BCD-I am puzzled

You type faster than I do, Kenn:) I'd just gotten finished putting that very link into my post, after making the same points. Given that he's in Turkey, he might want to go with a Kydex plate instead of the S/S one, depending on the water temperature and what tanks he's going to use. But I'm...
