Mask clearing-finding out the hard way

Just to follow up, this is one of the reasons I think all scuba divers should be comfortable, confident swimmers before they take scuba, and why allowing people to swim any stroke (including dog paddling, which isn't really a stroke) is inadequate preparation. If you know how to do freestyle...

    No more Thanks! button ?

While some people may have abused it, ISTM that threads are now going to be that much longer, if everyone who appreciates it posts a 'thanks' reply. And I agree we could use an 'I agree' button (h'mm, Department of Redundancy Department), to keep the number of '+1' posts down, and separate the...

    Want to borrow/rent Can light

I doubt luck will do it - What I need is a big helping of skill :dunce:, 10-20 years worth of flexibility returned to me, and about triple my inherent ability to multi-task:loopy: The difference between this and normal recreational diving puts me in mind of learning to drive a big rig in heavy...

    Want to borrow/rent Can light

Taking it now, Ben. Did the pool work this past weekend, and next weekend's in Monterey. Don was kind enough to loan me one for Rob's class. Thanks for the offer, but I'm not in the market for a can light now, as I can't currently afford one. At the rate that LEDs are improving, I figure that...

High Mountain Diving at Hester Lake

I won't be able to get to them anytime soon, as I'll have to go get them from my dad's house. But you can use google earth to get sort of a view from across the canyon (on the way up the trail into Dusy basin), although the stream isn't that obvious with all the snow. Guy

High Mountain Diving at Hester Lake

Me too. I did a lot of backpacking in that area from the late '70s -mid-'80s. Never been to Hester Lake, although I think I remember being able to see the stream that comes out of it into Le Conte Canyon, coming down the trail from Muir Pass or maybe from the trail up to Dusy Basin, and I've...

    Dive Report, Monterey, Memorial weekend

I beleive they have in the past, but I know before I was aware of the reg I never had a problem. I was usually diving solo, so maybe they're mainly worried about having classes take up most of the beach. Or maybe it's just way down the priority list, especially nowadays when they're happy to...

    Dive Report, Monterey, Memorial weekend

And the tourists arrive on the beach. 14.08.040 Diving along the waterfront. (a) For the purposes of this section the following terms are defined as follows: (1) Restricted Area. Beginning at a point where the easterly line of Ocean View Boulevard intersects with the northerly line of the...

Anyone else hate the word "newbie"?

That's "Probie", but same diff.:D While I agree that words ending in 'e' sounds often sound childish, I've always considered newbie, newb (or even n00b) to just be a short form of "inexperienced person at this task/job". Some undoubtedly use it as an insult, but to me it's just descriptive...

another take on Don's Essentials of Rec from the weekend

That begs the question, are you sure you want to look like synchronized swimmers?: YouTube - SNL, 1984 - "SYNCHRONIZED SWIMMERS" Guy :D(dating myself, but I can still remember rolling around on the floor laughing at this when it was first broadcast)

    Pt Lobos, Friday, May 21

Thanks for all the nav. info, especially the depths. I'm still learning my way around Lobos and have yet to see HitW, although I have found LM, GPW and points deeper. I need to spend more time exploring Middle Reef next time I'm out there, instead of just crossing it on the way back from GPW...

    Exposure Suit Debate

To be fair, you are a manufacturer's rep making a performance claim in a public forum, even if a somewhat informal one. You could get nailed by Truth in Advertising laws down the road, if someone wanted to be a jerk. "Noticeably less drag" would seem to be a more acceptable formulation...

5ft or 7ft hose for DIR setup

I use a 5' for single tank, non-penetration dives. I'm 6'0"/180 lb. I see no reason to have the extra 2' to trip over on the boat or get tangled with other gear. I can easily do a side-by-side swim-along air share with a 5' hose. That being said, for me the 5' is just a little short, being...

Yet another Neo vs Trilam thread

Do you solo dive? If so, a front-zip is the way to go. I personally want one anyway, for those occasions when I have to exit the water in a hurry on the way to a bathroom, and don't wish to be dependent on a buddy to unzip me. Using a P-valve or relief zipper will mostly eliminate that as an...

I didn't dive, but I have video of one

While I don't use decongestants while diving, I've been told that the trick to avoiding a Sudafed crash during a dive is not to swallow it, but just keep it under your tongue. Lasts a lot longer that way. Guy
