    Calm, flat, inviting, deceptive...

It will be cold for months, Mike. IME it's not something that suddenly appears and then disappears after a few days. Once the water gets cold, it will stay cold until the ocean gradually warms up. NW winds are pretty constant in the summer, except on the rare occasions when there's a high...

Why dont many SCUBA divers use a snorkel?

I virtually never use a snorkel while scubadiving. There are a couple of occasions when they're useful, and you've mentioned them: wanting to swim on your face or in big waves. Personally, I often have long surface swims weaving through thick kelp, and a snorkel is just one more thing to get...

    Calm, flat, inviting, deceptive...

Every spring, usually starting around late March or early April, there's an upwelling that brings deep, cold water out of the Monterey Canyon. This brings good vis with it, but the water temp drops well below 50 deg. Temps will warm up gradually over the summer, normally peaking around September...

LDS says My Torus 26 doesnt have enough LIFT

Didn't see this post until today. Cylinder Specifications Scrolling down to the LP85 you'll see exactly the same numbers as I gave, and the same ones which were in the OMS catalog. So, if the numbers are wrong the error is Faber's, not OMS, because (obviously) they do publish buoyancy...

    Any tips on valve drill

Since we're indulging in silly season, GUE requires you to initial a form promising not to use 'illicit' drugs like Marijuana. That brings up the question of what happens if California or other states legalize pot. If it's legal, it's no longer illicit.;) For some people it's clowns, for some...

    reading tank stampings

It's just if not more likely to be a high pressure steel tank than an older Al tank. The HP tanks will have E or SP followed by a 4 or 5 digit number. If you google the letter/number combo, it will normally bring up info on the company that made the tank. E9791 is PST, E or SP 14157 is...

What Tanks are these ? XS SCUBA 119

These are Worthington X8-119 tanks. IIRR, XS Scuba is one of their two distributors in the US. They're good tanks, but they should have "DOT" before (or maybe after, I forget) the "TC", or you may find it difficult to get them filled in the US. IIRR, buoyancy is -2.0/-10.9 lb., weight is 42 lb...

    "Mount Everest" of scuba diving

USS Seminole, mentioned in the article above, was the fleet tug that Edward Raymer was on when she was sunk. He also did repair work on the Portland in Tulagi harbor, and IIRR was initially sent to help the Atlanta but that was later changed. Guy

    Bottom Timer/Wrist Computer Question

That's the one. They still carry Uwatec and Suunto, they just don't sell them to the U.S. any more. If you change the country to say the UK, you can find the Luna w/o transmitter available for 477 GBP. Of course, unless the OP is going there or knows someone who is, that's not going to help him...

    Bottom Timer/Wrist Computer Question

Any of the Galileos. A used Terra would probably be cheapest, but a Luna without the transmitter would be next, if you can find one in the US. I'm trying to convince LP to offer them that way, as that spanish etailer (forget the name) does. No DSS boot, but some of the biggest fonts around...

    monastery report 5/9/2010

I don't know that there's any specific distance, but I try to never directly approach them, always aiming to pass them some distance to the side (typically 25' or more)and let them come to me if they choose. If you see one go into an alert posture, that in my book is disturbing them. OTOH, if...

Some things that I haven't learned yet

I'd think 5 lb. is excessive for just a vest. I add just 2 lb. for a fleece vest, and even going from a single layer fleece undergarment to a White's Mk. 3 only requires an extra 5 or 6 lb. The problem seems to be more one of dumping than extra weight. Guy

LDS says My Torus 26 doesnt have enough LIFT

As mentioned in a post upthread, Faber has made something like six different tanks around 85 cu. ft. I've had the Huron Scuba chart since 2007, at which time I noticed that the buoyancy numbers didn't agree with those in the 2007 OMS catalog (Faber made OMS tanks at the time). Nor did the...

LDS says My Torus 26 doesnt have enough LIFT

If the tank's new as the OP says (or was bought at least as far back as 2007), then it's far more likely to have the following buoyancy (from Faber's website): Full -3.80 lb. Empty +2.32 lb. Guy

    "Mount Everest" of scuba diving

I'm not into removing artifacts regardless of whether there was loss of life. In the case of military wrecks, they remain the property of the owning government unless sold, and as military graves AIUI disturbing anything is illegal. Certainly you'd be in big trouble if you did so in a place...
